I need some insider info here ;).

I'm looking into studying in the UK... med school... I mean, I know the UK has the world's best medical universities (and they're all in Scotland... how sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet...).

But I have a biiiiiiig issue about living in the UK, errr... a lot of people I have met from there have seemed, well, weird. In the we-don't-communicate-with-our-neighbours-nor-do-we-go-out kind of way. So that's got me a bit worried, I mean, the schools are great and all, but I don't really want to live some place where I won't have anyone to hang out with. Brits generally look like a very cold nation, I don't mean to offend anybody, I'm just speaking from my experience, from the people I have met, which then again might not be a very representative sample.

So, that's why I'm asking you guys... do you enjoy living in the UK? Do people, errrr, like, go visit each other and stuff? :p I'd hate to go there and feel really lonely and miss my friends like hell... so that's why I'm looking for insider info, duh ;) Basically, is it as bad as they show it on TV?

Hi there as someone who has lived in the uk for nearly 39 yrs i would say on the whole its a pretty cool place to live. Sure we have our fair share of people that dont communicate and who are bigots and some people that are intollerant to other ethnic groups but thankfully they are in the minority also the media are great at making countries look bad good old murdoch the biggest biggot of em all.

Come on over and i am sure you will be pleasantly surprised at what a friendly country we are.

It is true, a lot of people in the UK are very wrapped up in their own lives. It doesn't mean we are unfriendly though, we just take a little longer to open up to people.

Saying that though, once we do open up you have friends for life.

    Do it.

In general, I would have to say that Brits do have the tendency of keeping themselves to themselves quite a bit.... Obviously this isn't a blanket statement but you do notice it once you've been to different countries and come back.. (well, I did anyway)

I think as far as town comminities go no people generally from what ive seen just nip over their neighbours house, but thats probably because i live quite close to london, which isnt exactly one giant community. HOWEVER if you are studying then u instantly have people around you with shared interests, and you also spend a lot of time with them meaning you get a chance ot befriend and as the fly said once you are freinds with someone, if you treat em right you are generally friends for life. Its not hard to make friends here at all its just not the kind of place where people jump down your throat to be your friend.

Also if you ever need to get out while your here the UK community is so tight and friendly theres always someone willing to lend you a hand :) :D

Thanks for all the advice guys, the UK generally does sound like a pretty good place to live now :). I was just kind of worried because, well, I don't know, I'm really outgoing, and when I went to a British school, people looked at me as if I'm kind of weird... or maybe it was just my imagination :p. I mean, at least from what I've seen in that school, all of them had little cliches all to themselves and, you know, wouldn't accept anybody from outside... but it's a damn good thing that they were the minority.
