these dreads are reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallly annoying to keep together, it keeps unravelling and the loose hairs are pests. how long again does it take for them to mat up?. i got dreads because i didn't really want to tend to my hair, but lately it's just been insanely overwhelming.

also, i haven't washed my hair in over a week. How should i get this smell out?? I've danced, I've biked, walked all day in toronto and the scent has just built up. I need to get rid of it before it gets real bad.

    Peace

Dreads can be a lot of work at first. In time, they'll start doing their own things...let them grow, sister. No worries.

you dont really need to "baby" them, IMO.mine still have a long way to go(2 months old now) and yeah, parts have unraveled, its frizzy sometimes, but I just dont worry about it.

just wash it and go, take your mind off of it and in some months they'll be fine

I think I washed mine for the first time after 2 weeks, you should be fine, just use a residue free shampoo, obviously

i do have the knottyboy shampoo bar, which I'll probably use in a few days. I was trying to go a month without washing. I'm still keen on not washing it, I dont mind much especially since i've been burning much insence (thanks for the tip random dude on the forum!) and it's not that bad. I hardly get any itches. thanks for the advice friends!

Dude. Wash 'em, and they won't smell.

    They'll knot faster, too.

And make Nag Champa your best friend.

By not washing them, your hair is getting oily.

    Oil + Knots = slipping.

If your hair is oily the knots will slip right out. Keep them from getting oily...For the first few months I washed my dreads in salt water...it seemed to help the knotting process. It dries them out slightly which is good for knotting. Just a suggestion.

okay! by jove i'll do it
    I'll wash them tomorrow morning.

I hope it helps. i reallllly do. has anyne heard of a lemon spray? or putting lemon in your hair? i hear it expediates the knotting process.

I'll also try washing them in the salt water. Just need to buy some sea salt. thanks again. you're all hair savers.

hmm, the only thing I've ever heard is that it bleaches your hair or something...

yea lemmon juuce just acts like peroxide & bleaches your hair in the sun or when u blow dry..salt water does really get your dreads going, just takin a swim in the ocean now & then will really tighten em up fast
for the 1st month or 2 i just used regular bar soap like ivory cause it did dry it enough to get the dreads going..now tho i even condition it sometimes, i use a conditioner made for horses tails & manes.. but i dont do it often cause it takes 1/2 bottle every time i do, & takes well over an hour to rince
