Or are vegetarians not allowed to have dogs?

Can see why it would be frowned upon by some, as you'd be suppourting the slaughter houses and such.
Still you would be 'allowed', as it's for them and that is their natural diet (after a fashion) and you wouldn't eat it obviously. So can still qualify for membership to the club. :)

Yup it's definetly fine to adopt dogs. I know plenty of vegetarians/vegans with companion dogs. Makes everyone happy, so that's a good thing.

Vegetarian: someone who consumes no animals, fish, or products dervived from the slaughter there of.
    Pretty much anything else goes.

It wouldn't be fair to deprive a dog of it's natural diet just because you don't eat meat.
I mean in the wild they would hunt animals.

i have a dog and as much as she loves meat ive managed to keep her on a vegetarian diet and shes really healthy

other members of my family feed her meat occasionally which i dont mind as long as im not paying for the flesh of a dead animal

Agreed. But then you must feed your dog raw meat, because the cancer-filled crap they pack into Purina Dog Chow is definitely not natural.

My dogs are on a veg diet, and they're healthier than any other dogs I've ever seen (I've posted their pics here so many times yall are probably sick of em). If they want meat, they're free to hunt it themselves, which they don't. My reasons for being veg are primarily health--so it would be hypocritical of me to feed my friends anything less than the best.

Whatever you do, PLEEZ don't feed your pets "pet food". There's a reason why it's "not suitable for human consumption." Do the research!

my dogs are not veg.....one day *maybe* (but i highly doubt it as they are picky eaters as it is and probably wouldnt take to a veg diet). i feed them somthing called Nutro Max....no by products. its expensive as hell ($1.10 per can!) but i'd rather go broke on that then feed them commercial dog food......that stuff is beyond rancid.

Spaceduck is absolutely right - feeding dogs processed dog food is harmful.. Dogs will eat almost anything you do and love rice and pasta...if your vegetarian diet is healthy chances are with a few nutritional supplements your dogs diet will be healthy too.
I have two OLd English Sheepdogs who are extremely healthy on a veggie diet.
In the wild dogs are more scavengers than hunters and can happily survive well with no meat.
Feeding dogs dog food that is unfit for human consumption is not something i would cosider...

    Hello.

Dogs are by nature carnivores, but they can also eat fruits and veggies. That said, I think it's unfair to make pets eat the diet we choose, when as others have stated here earlier, they eat meat as a natural diet.

Cats for instance cannot eat a vegan/vegetarian diet because their bodies were designed to consume meat, same as dogs. Cats cannot however eat fruits and veggies or consume milk as so many people seem to think they can. They are lactose intolerant. After one years old, their bodies cannot digest milk proteins.

There are plenty of green/chemical free pet foods on the market. Just do the research. Purina is not the only food available on the market for animals. Before you decide to change your pet over to a vegan diet do some research to learn more about the natural foods animals eat.

It isn't really fair to force your way of eating on your animal.

Yes, by all means do your research. For example, how many of you knew that the oldest living dog is a vegan? (Bramble, a collie living in Bridgewater, UK. Google it.)

My dog is picky and wouldn't eat out of this new bowl my mom bought him, lol. I can't imagine his reaction if we started feeding him veg. dog food! I think if he was raised on veg. food it would be fine, but a drastic change is not really fair. Plus my parents buy the dog food so I don't really get a say anyhow.

if i had a dog, he would no doubt be vegan. i feed my cat organic chicken, its very earth friendly and healthier than 99% of commercial cat 'food'. chickens=one of the smaller animal products in the food chain=less pollution. plus its not that much more expensive than regular cat food and my cats health is worth it a couple extra bucks.

Actually, dogs are omnivores, not carnivores. Also, they are scavengers, not predators.

My dogs eat nutritionally complete vegetarian pet food for the most part. The co-op has had problems with suppliers, and I feed Solid Gold Holistic blend with salmon meal when I can't get their veggie food. They also get Mr. Barky's vegetarian dog biscuits and occasional people food that is safe for dogs to eat. My dogs are very healthy with shiny, soft coats. They are the kind of dogs people ooh and ah over, and two of the three are mutts (all three were rescued).

Given the choice between a bit of meat and a piece of sweet, ripe melon, my dogs choose the melon.

But we won't teach you the secret handshake unless your animal was a rescue (is she serious? I think she's serious. You never can tell)
