I have never tasted tofu in my life, and i am switching to be a vegetarian, and i was wondering what ways to prepare it. Seriously, im completely clueless on tofu. Do most of you veggies like tofu? whats your favorite dish with it?
You can marinate it in just about anything from italian dressing to soy/tamari sauce. I have it frozen to use in stir frys and I like it baked or blended into a spread or sauce. It is a very bland food that will take on the tastes of whatever it is with. vegsource.com and vegweb.com have recipes for all kinds of tofu dishes. Enjoy!
i managed to find this italian seasoned tofu at my grocery store, but if you don't have that you could just add spices to this and likely get the same result what i did was i scrambled it. i put some olive oil in a frying pan (my dad had this spicy olive oil which just made it better, it was just olive oil with a big red spicy pepper stuck in the bottle) and fried up some onions, red and green peppers and cauliflower and then mushed the tofu up and stuck it in the pan too and waited till the tofu got kinda brown on the outside. threw on some salt, stuck it in a pita and ate the hell out of it. there's a zillion other recipies for scrambled tofu as well, it's probably the best way i've ever eaten tofu.
The big thing is to make sure you drain and press the tofu before preparing. Put the tofu between two clean towels and stack a bunch of plates on top. Leave it that way for at least 20 minutes. After that, you can marinate or season it any way you like. Tofu has very little flavor on its own and takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with. Vegweb.com is a great resource for vegetarian recipes. Also, you do not have to eat tofu to be a vegetarian, so if you don't like it at first, there are lots of other foods you can eat. It was something of an acquired taste for me at first, and it took a bit to become proficient in cooking it.
Plus, it makes an excellent and nutritious finger food for babies starting at around 10 months. Our first daughter got little cubes of raw tofu each and every morning beginning at about 10 months until she was about 16 months. She loved it!
i fry mine in tamari and olive oil. If you get the soft tofu you can make great scrambled "eggs". The hard tofu is what you want to use for stir-frying. You should also try out Tempeh...fry it in olive oil and tamari and top with Nutritional Yeast Flakes. It resembles bacon and makes excellent "BLT's".
i love the stuff, it's incredible. You can eat it literally a million differnt ways. I really enjoy firm tofu in teryaki or sweet + sour stirfrys. I also really like fried tofu. Theres lots of ways to eat tofu just be creative.
I've only done this once because it's more work than I care to do for tofu. (I like to eat it plain or with soysauce) But agedashi tofu is fucking delicious. http://japanesefood.about.com/od/tofu/r/agedashidofu.htm
I like it marinated in a mixture of soy and sweet chilli sauce, then fried. It's good on a roll with avocado, onion, lettuce, tomato and a bit more sweet chilli sauce on top.
