If you're not Christian, this might still apply to you if you pray. If you don't pray, or believe please don't start ripping on beliefs in this thread, there are plenty of others for you to prey on. Anyhow....For most of my life I've prayed, and it was always the types of things that seem to be prayed for. For some examples "Dear God, please let the game go well," "please keep my family safe," "please give me advice on what to do," "please give me that job," etc. It was shown to me recently that soooo much of what we pray is simply asking for what we would like to have happen. Often times what we want or *think* we need is probably not going to be part of God's greater plan for your life. Even the bad, horrible stuff has its purpose. So, maybe it would be better to pray for something like "please give me the wisdom to take the path that you would want me to take" or something along those lines. Also, thinking this way makes is much easier to see "bad" things as not so bad. Hope that at least gives you something to think about
I prayed for a blow job on March 31st. I really prayed hard. I wanted a blow job very bad. I went out that night, got wasted with some friends. Driving home from the afterhours bar at about 5 am I see a hot chick on the corner. I yell "need a ride"! She hops in my car and says "ooohh, I want it now, let's go to a parking lot." She goes there with me, starts sucking me off and I feel a beard. I was so wasted, I did not notice that it was a dude until I felt the stubble. Looked like a hot chick to me.... Well, it was April fools day at 5am and God answered my prayer with a fucking prank. Then again, all the good (from a chick) blow jobs that God has given me more than make up for one prank, but what the fuck!!! How do you prank God? It's impossible. God will always be one up on me. Well, 2... but that's another story.
well somethingwitty, I think you are right. Indeed we first need to get together with God and not see him as some kind of dude who'll give you all the presents you didn't get from santa... Asking for Gods will for your life, and wisdom, is a very good thing. Also I think it's good to learn to worship in prayer (praising good for who He is, telling Him how and why you love Him), and to thank for all that he gave you, both material and physical. I agree with praying shouldn't become a dull wish-list, but also I think that no thing is too small for God. It's not like you can only ask Hom for very super-spiritual things. If someone wants to live totally for God, then why not talk about your financial situation or your schoollife or work or familie with Him? Not only like 'oh God give me a car and raise my salary'. But also commiting your financial issues in His hands, asking His will about it, also asking Him how much you should give and to who, or what organisation.(I just read the book 'daring to live on the edge; the adventure of faith and finances'). I just gave my schoolwork to God some weeks ago. Some years ago I used wicca and focused it on my schoolwork. On school I am known to both teachers and other students as a freestyler who bends rules, is always late, does half work and always gets it my way by talking to teachers and using diplomacy to talk myself out of it, and to the next semester...anyway, I now closed that door, and opened to door to God by commiting my schoolwork to Him. It'll be a lesson to learn, but now I'm going to do the last year of school different (this is my exam year of highschool). hope to hear more on your ideas on prayer!
How we should pray is illustrated in Matthew 6:9-13 Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name: (Praise and glorification) Thy kingdom come, thy will be done (Praying for his will to be done) Give us this day our daily bread (Praying for our needs/the needs of others) Forgive our trespasses (Asking forgiveness for our sin) Lead us not into temptation (Praying against the enemy) Yes, you are correct in your statement that we do focus too much on our own will. (Christ showed us this as a demonstration, yet, many people confuse this and use it as a prayer.)
Though I agree with you that Christ used this as a demonstration, do you mean that it's not ok to pray the 'our Father'?
lol.. nah.. Definitely a prank from the all powerful one. God likes to tease me. Well, I mean, I like it when God teases me, as long as it isn't toooooo much.
Yes! You got it! This is prayer indeed: the kind of prayer that sustains your open communication and relationship with God.
Every thought is a prayer, don't you think? And we should always be thankful for everything we have (even if its not exactly what we wanted) because it was obviously exactly what we needed at the time otherwise God wouldn't have given it to us.
