So how do you go from here now? Did you figure things out allready? I'm interested, please could you tell more about your interest in unity with nature and animals etc, and the things you like about christianity?
http://gamma.faithweb.com/9.html "So people can't be Christian, for example, and Pagan?" -Kinda. Syncretic religions, like Voudoun, combine indigenous beliefs with Christianity. There are Pagan syncretic faiths too, like "Arthurian Christianity," "Jewitchery" and Christopagans. Here's a venn diagram:
If you want the truth of the matter... the christian faith is more pagan than most christians would want to believe anyway.... interesting site for you to take a look at: http://home.earthlink.net/~pgwhacker/ChristianOrigins/
well, i still enjoy doing spells, i havnt because im still kinda, well, scared i guess, i sooo want to combine them, but im afraid of what might go around my church, i love the lord, but i love wicca,i love nature and the connection that the wiccan religeon has with it, i love spells and the sense of being self aware and oh its so hard to explai, i do beleive that god wouldnt aprrove, but i do other things he hates too, so y be so stingy? so, i have actually been thinking about picking up my spells and pracitces again, but remain a christian, i wouild never leave the lord. things are becoming more and more clear as times go on and the more it think about it....
OK, I was raised Baptist and sent to a private Southern Baptist Christian School for 7 years (6th grade to 12th) and have you ANY FRIGGIN' IDEA about the Bible verses, teachings, etc they forced down my throat? For pity's sake, Bible was an additional class on top of Math, Science, etc! Like most anyone going through this for that amount of time, I had my Jesus Freak stage. I LOVED IT. I was walking on sunshine every day. Then as I started reading the Bible more and more, I had questions about some things in there. The school and church leaders would either avoid my questions or accuse me of blasphemy against the Holy Book. This got old quickly and after way too many unanswered questions and inconsistencies, I "lost my faith." Experimented with Buddhism, Islam and Hinduism during those tumultuous High School years and when all was said and done, decided to become a "Borrower." (One who doesn't follow one set of beliefs from one faith, but incorporates beliefs from any number of faiths in their lives.) Then I discovered Paganism and currently it holds a major interest in my life. I like the freedom and am reveling in the acknowledgment of the Feminine. Will Paganism be right for me? Who knows? I still have a lot more research to do before I make up my mind. And that's my advice to you. You're only 15, and the reasons you've listed above as being the reasons you want to be Pagan (i.e., you have siblings and friends who are Pagan) are TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY THE WRONG REASON FOR ADHERING TO ANY RELIGION/FAITH. Research both religions that you are torn between instead of going along for the ride with your friend. If Wicca is what you have practiced for a year, why did you convert? If you were dissatisfied enough to convert, then what makes you think you won't be dissatisfied again? After all, people from any faith who are happy with their belief systems don't tend to want to convert (let alone actually doing it)! I think a reevaluation of your reasoning is what you should focus on most right now. Sorry this was so long. Reading this again, I can see how many of my statements can be perceived as "bitchy" or "know-it-all." I assure you, I did not intend for that and mean for this post to only be sympathetic to your struggle between Church and Pagan teachings and a few reasonable and objective questions for the original poster to think about in her decision between the two. Best of luck in whatever you choose,Rider On The Storm PS: Don't limit yourself to just Christianity or Paganism. There's more religions out there than you can shake a stick at! You say you feel you're being led on a path. That's true, but restricting yourself to just 2 religions to explore is restricting the paths that could be in your future. For instance, your path in Christianity might be to be a member of the congregation (and that's fine) but your path in Shamanism might be to hold the rank of Shaman. See what I mean? Two paths, both tailored for you, but one lets you be a participant and the other, a leader. Get the most (attain as much knowledge) as you can from wherever the source, and never limit yourself. If a monk shares knowledge of meditation with you, would you not listen because you don't share his faith? No. Learn from all, from every spectrum. You might be surprised.
A very interesting thread that contained a lot of information given by some very articulate folks. I do not have the theological background to comment on much of it. I am not sure who is running everything – I am just grateful for each day that she/he/it keeps cranking the great wheel. I am simpleminded enough to believe that “do as you would have done to you” will get you through most of life’s problems and that what ever religion you choose should be judged by the amount of happiness it creates in you. However, I am often wrong.
In my view each separate religion or belief deserves respect, and what you practice within that belief needs a greater degree of respect. mrsmorrison - you say that you think your god won't approve of your practices - which others have pointed out - is against the bible's rules. You're 'doing spells' which whether you believe it or not, has an influence on the world around you. Prayer also has an effect just as great. There are many instances that proves both. You say that you love spells, but are you really thinking about what goes with it? Can you give the appropriate respect to the divinities that you invoke, or really understand the properties of the herbs/crystals etc that you utilize? And what about the christian way of things? I can't comment on these as I don't actually know what a christian would (or should) do! And yeah! I know I'm going to be laughed at and chided for what I've said but it's what I believe so there!
I agree with you Lazuli, im not laughing or chiding. NOW, that said, if a Christian looked at their own faiths polytheistic origins, and adopted that there are more than one gods at play in the OT, then they are more open to mixing. The god of Abraham, and the god of Moses were two different gods, thats totally against the Judeo-Christian dogma, but the theology and mythology is there to back up the claim. It was the god of Abraham that Jesus spoke of, and its the god of Moses that made the Jews take covenant, he is the vain and jealous one. They stuck by him (Yahweh) and didnt hear the teachings of Jesus, asking them to come back to their father, not the mean and tyranical god that they worshipped. If one worships the father that Jesus spoke of to his people, you worship the tribal father god of the Semitic tribes, just as I worship my own father god of the Gaulish tribes. It can work, but it takes lots of deep study, and knowledge to back it up. Now can one be Christian, and Wiccan? no, because Wicca likes to mix all gods as one, therefore not worshiping the god that Jesus spoke of specifically.
You poor soul. I am a baptist school survivor as well. Grades 2-11 Maybe we should start a support group - I know there is more of us out there!
well, i have still been practicing wicca, and i have almost totaly forgotten chrsitianity, its like it dosnt even exist tome any more, so i suppose i was meant for wicca all along! thanks forall ur great info u guys! but wicca is here to stay, i was wondering y it kept coming back into my head lol, well, i am happy with my decision, it has been hard, but i think i have it now! haha thanx guys
I am sorry that i missed this thread until now. I totally disagree with the idea that Christianity is defined by the bible! The bible is a tool created by men to subjugate the masses. I do not believe that it accurately represents the teachings of Christ or his God/s. Like many works of purposeful deception, it contains elements of truth to help lead the marks into believing the lies. Realize that the bible is just a compilation of works chosen by a group of men and then often translated inaccurately for specific purposes. Read it as a fictional work of propaganda that contains glimpses of the true teachings. The church in its many forms comprises what i like to call Christ Brand (tm). Christ Energy is love and blends well with any loving path. The pagans i respect most are those who can fully integrate Christianity and pagan practice. Another thing to ponder is that the difference between prayer and spells is just a matter of semantics. Prayer is just the xtian form of spells, no more. I absolutely agree with most of what GreenGoddess said in this thread. I have great respect for Heron and others, but i think you are thinking inside far too confining a box. The God of love does not need to be feared. On last point, the age of a practice does not reflect upon its validity. I have a friend who dreamed an entire pagan path called Shea. It is a wonderful powerful practice. I have been part of moving rituals based on the characters of Star Wars. It is the practice not the archtypes you chose to use for your symbolism. Make it all up! It is just as valid as anything ancient if in resonates within your soul. Namaste Jim
Firelip, the box of the bible is nothing more than a tool for me to construct theory on Semitic mythology. Believe me, its not my religion. To think outside the box, you have to actually believe in the box to begin with. Sit down and talk to me more, or read more of my journal, i promise you wont see the box.
