A friend and i drove by a campground the other day that made me want to throw up. It was disgusting to even look at. The campground was packed with people, but there was no trees, no rock formations, no water, it was nothing but freshly mowed grass. Each individual campsite had poured cement, (like a driveway) I mean everyones tents were pitched on the fucking cement pads. What is wrong with these people, thats not camping. They would have gotten the same effect had they just stayed at home and pitched their tents on the sidewalks in front of their houses.
amen brother. drunks and idiots all night, screaming kids first thing in the morning. One of the many reasons I always camp illegally.
They even had electrical outlets at each site. I seen a family with a t.v. outside watching nascar!! Whatever happened to watching nature? I guess having no commercial interruptions would seem to weird to them. Thank god i do most of my camping on the AP trail.
That's one of the main reasons I took up backpacking. I love camping but I hated most campgrounds for the reasons stated above. So I picked up a trail guide and equip. and would walk in a few miles for primo camping. Plus, even a hike as short as a few miles weeds out the riff-raff/a-holes. You tend to meet people like yourselves, people who love nature, who prefer camping over staying at a parking lot.
Back in indiana atleast around me anyways that pretty much all there is now. We used to have primitive camp grounds that had no electricity or running water. They had the shitters with the holes in the ground and that was it. Where we went was pretty secluded back in the woods. But a few years ago they shut them all down and now only have that modern bullshit and well it pretty much sucks. We dont go there anymore. Now we have to drive down to one of the state parks for real camping. That or we would usually just go out to my grandparents farmland and theres lots of woods and what not back by the river. Camp out there, but its not really backpacking in the tradional sense cause we have to walk accross corn fields to get where we want to go.
hell down here i see "resorts" all the time that are on the main highway no trees, restaurants n stores on site and so close together it looks like a trailer park on crack.... kinda amazes me how (erm) advanced these places have become over the last few years,,, saddens me to think that these ppl call it a vacation,,, and makes me ill that these places can charge 25-30 bux or more a nite n call it a campground..if that was what i wanted i think i would just go stay at a microtel, prolly a bit quieter in the end and many of the same effects that ya gotta get outta campin that way...
i once dated a girl a few years back who could not go camping unless there were showers, mirrors, and an outlet for a hair dryer. It would be correct for you to assume that the relationship did not last long.
They slept on the cement? What a bunch of dumbfucks, them and the people who designed the "campground". Man I hate places like that, the open grass field with a few token trees. Had to stay at places like that a couple times (got shut out of the overcrowded state parks, end up on a grass field, listening to trucks on the highway all night, to say nothing of the noisy neighbors). And as far as these "modern" sites go, well, anywhere with electricity is not camping, I prefer the backwoods, shitting in a cathole, bathing in the lake, and being alone. No RV generators (or RV's period), no gas lamps, no hairdryers, no plumbing, no civilization and it's cancerous effect on me. (I just got back from a weeklong backpacking trip, and am not adjusting to this concrete hell very well).
I live in Fairbanks, Alaska and I am glad that we have no places like that around here. When me the wife and the kids to go camping it is so peaceful and serene that I almost dont want to go back to work on Monday. If you ever find yourself in Alaska go camping on the bank of the Yukon river it is gorgeous. Peace Mavet
believe me, i'll be in alaska. I've spent a lot of time their already, on two different occacions. Both my father and my sister live in Fairbanks. I share your love for its uncomparable beauty.
Almost? Shit, today will be my first day back to work, and I'm dreading it. They don't call it 'the grind' for nothing, it will grind you to dust before you die. Sure feels like it. You don't even realize how bad it is till you get away from it for a bit. I never realized how negetive and unhappy I am until last week out in the woods, when it hit me that I actually felt good, and wasn't thinking negetively.
Your in detroit, i'm in philadelphia, i'm sure we feel each others pain. The only cure at the moment is getting out of the city and into the woods as often as possible.
So where was the "campground" and why so packed, what is the attraction? I've camped at Woodstock when it was packed but the reasons for going were beyond mere camping.
the campground was somewhere in missouri. I'm not from that area so i couldn't tell you exactly what part. It was a beautiful weekend, but other then that i did not notice any attractions. We didn't spend a lot of time their, just drove through it and got out as quickly as possible.
cement would be a blessing. in the campgrounds in louisiana, all the state and national parks and some private owned have gravel tent pads. and it is mandatory that your tent be on it. not good for the tent, not good for the back! they must assume everyone has an air mattress or foam pad.
They went a little overboard. Who the fuck wants to pitch a tent on concrete. Better off camping in your basement.
Ummmm, I don't want to state the obvious, etc. - but if this site was in the UK it would simply be a fairly normal "camping and caravan" site. The concrete area is simply a hardstanding, which you park your caravan or motorhome on (not sure what you call them?? RV's???). The powerpoints are provided to plug the vehicle into. The people who turn up for camping (in tents) don't normally use them and it doesn't sound like an ideal surface to me?! But eitherway, I guess you are largely correct. "Camping and caravanning" sites are for mainstream society - us more wiser types shun such luxuries and artifical experience of the outdoors.
