Language is a very very interesting thing. You can't think about/process or communicate things you don't have a word for. Well you can, but only in a really abstract manner. The term grimoire (book of magic) and grammar have the same root, and many people into the occult recognise that language is a VERY VERY important part of the human psyche. Change the language and you change people's perception. That's what political correctness is about. Instead of "crippled" meaning broken or disabled, "differently abled" conveys the concept the person is perfectly OK but has a different set of skills and challenges, which is healthier and more positive. But political correctness extended beyond the "good idea" e.g. getting rid of words like faggot, ******, chink, etc. and making it completely unacceptable to use them (unless you live in the ghetto) and into the "bad" (making it a sin to question certain things like why is "no whites need apply" not racist???? Hello???) not only destroyed the idea but made it a target. I mean, how many people use PC speak unless they're trying to take the piss.
I think that being PC is bullshit. im not about to go out and say "hey ******", but i will not start saying "native american" or "african american". these people have been called black and indian since i was born, and i dont plan on stopping. just like old people still say colored poeple. homosexuals are gay, and if someone calls me caucasian i'll give them a stupified look like , "what did you say". see instead of saying "that guy is a faggish ******", I would say "that is a gay black man". and how dumb does this sound? "that man is a homosexual native american"
you've never been called the c-word (cracker) or the h-word (honkie)? i'm deeply offended whenever i am called the c or h words.
lol. i have, actually, though the last time i was called "honkie" was in long beach, ca, in 1982. i think i was called a turkey then, too. it was kinda strange.
I think Political Correctness is a little shallow. It doesn't try and clean up harsh mentality, and make people more respectful of each other, but change the words to something they view as more palatible, which I think takes away from the intended context of the speaker. As if it's words that make speech hateful... it's the context of the words thats important. George Carlin had something really relevant to say on the subject. And so forth.
quote: though the last time i was called "honkie" was in long beach, ca i was called something like "gimmyowallet" in Long Beach, is that some kind of slang for honky? anyone know?
I was called "honkey" from a few kids in high school. I didn't really know what it was...just thought they were making fun of my last name, which rhymes with honkey. Took yrs for me to find out what it meant.
i once called a boy i liked "joser" because his name was jose. i had no idea that was a bad name. i still don't know why. damn shame, too, he was so cute. naturally he hated me after that.
