Hi. As I've gotten older, I've realised that I'd rather live in a world where people look after each other better and we look after the planet better (don't we all). But as i'm new to this attitude, I don't really know where to start. I mean I'm driving my car less and riding my bike more, recycling etc, but does anyone have any practical tips. I mean I'm still typing on a microsoft computer, and listening to a cd on my sony system! Is this a no-no? I also want to dye my hair, but am now concerned about the chemicals in the dye. Any practical advice would be greatly appreciated. Are there alternative computers, cd players and hair dye!!!!! Thanks heaps.

laptops are the most efficient computers. they only take some 15 watts of power i think and consequently save you a lotta cash as well. you could buy a flat screen monitor which are more eco-friendly since they dont have lead in them and use less power but you might as well get a laptop if your gonna get a new machine. and dont just toss your computer in a landfill to leech mercury and dangerous metals. many places in the phone book probably recycle computer parts and dispose of them responsibly.

another good power save is fluroescent lights which only use 15 watts as well compared to the typical wasteful 60 watt indaescent. i would just trash your indaescents if you got em. fluros cost a little more bust last like 9000 hours longer and pay themselves off easily in the first month. and i bet drumminmama would know about the chemicals in hair dye. you can find her in the vegetarian forum, which is also another very important, hip and easy thing to do. many people start to feel more hip and vibrant after they go vegetarian or vegan for about a month.

you can also convert your car to vegetable oil relatively easily if you get a vehicle with a diesel engine. or just take public transportation when you need to travel 'un-bikeable' distances, they save lots of precious resources. planting trees is always a really hip and fun thing to do too. or you can just give some money to tree planting projects or other good looking organizations : )

Some very good tips. Others include your types of materials in your clothing. Stick with natural fibres, such as cottons and hemp, anything plant-based. Try to steer away from wool and leather -- animal made materials require extra farmland to raise the animals, and the farmers end up taking down forests and wildlife instead. Plant-based materials are grown in the same field year after year, often rotated between two fields.

Become very frugal with your household items. There's no reason to buy expensive cleaners for everything -- I clean my entire house, top to bottom, with vinegar and baking soda (and sometimes a bit of rubbing alcohol, if it is something I want to disinfect). Try to make a use for everything before you throw it out. You'd be amazed at the posibilities. Find any book from the Depression and you'll see what I mean.

Just let your imagination guide you, you'll be amazed. Just keep in mind, "Will this cause damage to my world?" Good luck, and share your own tips!

    Bright Blessings!

Recycling is better than not, but even recycling factories consume energy and produce pollution. I think the key here is to waste as little as possible in the first place. Pay attention to what you are buying and how much waste packaging there is per amount of consumable goods. Buying in balk is pretty much always more eco friendly. Fast food places produce very much waste per food that you get, especially those individually wrapped condoment packages. I bet more processing energy, and chemicals go into the packaging than the actual "sauce" that they contain. To me this is rediculous!!!

If you have a yard or greenhouse grow your own food without using harsh chemicals. I live in an apartment but my balcony is full of herbs, cucumbers, peppers, etc. It is pretty neat to just be able to go on my porch and grab a fresh snack that I know has no chemicals coating it!

As far as i can see, all you have to do is bathe in a river...
    Hahaha....

From what ive seen, a hippy is somebody that all they can do is love and be happy, they dont have the energy to do anything else anymore.. and they drift with that, for whereever they are, they are happy... they cant twist theyre heads all up, they just naturally fall into the easiest way to go about things.. and of course that is LOVE

all hippies have natural hair: no hair spray, no shampoo, no die, no cuts
all hippies walk everywhere. plane, train, bus, car, etc. are not an option
all hippies walk miles to go to concerts rather than listening to cd's
    all hippies have no computers

just shut up and be yourself!!!

    peace and love,

To be a hippy you need to realize that noone should be labelled a "type of person", that that person is who the are.

In other words, be yourself, don't strive to be labelled under a type of person.
