Anybody enjoy, even occasionally, silent movies? My nephew brought over a friend who had never heard of Laurel and Hardy, much less seen one of their silent shorts.
I saw that once when I was a kid. Dreamed about it that night. Spooky when Count Orloff (Dracula) stacking coffins in negative black and white.
oh you mean through the negative shot in the forest. the phantom coach ride. yeah its a very interesting scene. since everthing had to be the opposite color to look the same. the forest is white and everything else is the same as it was in the other shots. i only know silent horror for the most part. the golem metropolis cabinet of dr. caligari phantom of the opera faust and nosferatu as was already said.
i like silent movies, i bought nosferatu, metropolis and the chaplin collection on dvd, but these are all the silent movies i've seen. they're so hard to find here. nosferatu is so scary, even more than modern movies. besides the ones already mentioned i'd also like to see 'sunrise' and 'the passion of joan of arc'. I also downloaded 'la voyage dans la lune (a trip to the moon)' (1902) of george melies. was this the first science fiction movie?
I adore them! I have a few Charlie Chaplin ones, and also enjoy Nosferatu...I usually watch them in the middle of the night or really early in the morning on TV...
nothing beats Lon chaney's vers. of Phantom of the Opera Gish is the queen of silent flicks. Seriously, no one can out act Gish for the non-talkies.
There was supposidly a lost film of Lon Chaney called "London after Dark" or something like that. The only film clip that survives is Chaney turning into a Vampire. The Hollywood myth is Chaney had his teeth filed down into sharp razor like points for the film. Don't think this is true. He was a expert make-up artist and could probably figure a way to achieve the effect for the film. I did see a still of him grinning (bareing teeth) and in costume; it must have been one hell of a film.
yeah "london after midnight". i really wish this film survived too. i didnt know there was a clip that even still existed.
Universal Studios released a 2 disc DVD set. It contains the 1931 Boris Karloff version with audio commentary option, and several other Frankenstein movies. They did the same for Dracula and Wolfman. They digitally improved the picture and sound as well.
If you get cable (or satellite dish) Turner Classic Movies channel shows silent films at about 1am Monday mornings. Check your local listings, the times change week to week. Wait, just noticed you're from Belgium. Sorry, don't think I can help.
those "legacy" collection box sets that were relased of the old unviresal films to promote "van helsing" are pretty nice. They have all of the films of frankenstein, dracula and the wolf man. walmart had them for 20 bucks each. my dad picked them up, if you like the films theyre worth the price.
i dont have cable, no silent movies for me although i would kind of like to see one, i havent for a while...does blockbuster have silent movies?
Caligari is my favorite silent film. its a very surreal film. most german expression films were very good.
The closest thing to a silent movie released recently in the Triplets of Bellevue. I haven't seen it yet, however I understand there is very little dialog. Before that Mel Brooks released "Silent Movie" in 1976.
Silent Movie is qiute funny and i recommend that everyone make an attempt to see it. Directed by Mel Brooks of course it's funny.
i received two silent movies today; 'das kabinett des dr.caligari' and 'birth of a nation'. can't wait to see them.
