Notice all those things today on tv like speed up your dial up with broad band. Does it really speed it up? I have optimum online cable modem. Just wondering if anyone has broad band and if their is a difference.

I'd like to see some tests from reliable sources.

Sure, compression can speed stuff up - but I remember the early 90s where people were promising you could double your memory with compression techniques. Problem was, all the stuff did was mess with your memory manager and say you had 2x memory. BIG refund time

they use these like super cache machines so sites you frequent load fast, your DL time is still no good if you are trying to get an MP3 from a legal source.......

Everything is just compressed on one of their machines before coming to you, the only thing it really makes a difference with speedwise is image heavy sites, and of course they all come out looking like crap. For the most part it's just marketing BS.

Probably just uses some sort of slight compression, not much other way to speed things up.

maybe they mean it's more aerodynamic, so when you chuck it out the window it goes faster?

  8. 1. it reduces the data
    2. it reduces the distances and the protocol length

they cache more pages and use different caching methods to make it so that when you request a page you'll get it from your isp instead of the real server, it also has a shorter "handshake" so that you don't have to wait as long for it to find the page, basically it's smart corner cutting....

wait, is he talking about speeding up his dial up, or his wireless LAN?

those are two COMPLETELY different things

No you can not speed up dial up. The "speed optimizers" will only request smaller images and decide on which way to recieve the html.

if i walk around ur neighborhood with a labtop running Knoppix-STD distro on it, and a high gain directional antena, i can tap into that shit and drop packet sniffers all over ^.-

On a router like that one, I think they mean Faster interface with your machine.
NO real big deal unless you ARE on a network.

Shit! I just remembered. The FCC dictates the fastest speed a modem can go.
56K is 56K anyway ya look at it. Get DSL or Cable.

You are quite right here. However, it would be unfair to say it was worthless. Certainly with remote internet connections such as via a mobile/cellphone it can be a very useful way to get to the stuff you need quickly without downloading the original large images and adverts, etc. I know plenty of peeps that swear by it. It's also pretty inexpensive. I guess those that complain about it are expecting genuine broadband speed, which IS indeed marketing bishop. ;)
