Hey everyone, tell me about local bands you like... and if you don't live in the US, some good national music that never really crossed the border... You see I was thinking about that, music not leaving a certain country and I thought it was a shame. Some good Dutch 'mainstream' I really recommend is Anouk (www.anouk.nl), a rocksinger with a good voice and a nice style... In the early 80's the Dutch ska-reggaeband Doe Maar (http://www.won.nl/dsp/usr/svketel/Music/Doemaar/) was really popular. A lesser-known Dutch artist is Spinvis, very weird experimental popmusic (www.spinvis.be, check kijkvoer, then clips. Local bands... not sure... you should check out R.O.L.F. (http://www.xs4all.nl/~emlau/, check media then the link)Amsterdam, it's ska by some 18-year-olds and it's very good, especially or such a young band.
The hat trick...... good.... check 'em out - www.geocites.com/thehattrick03/ Dear John.....amazing mostly acoustic, religous based though- dearjohnmusic.com
Mushcup.....there from pittsburgh. Its really hard to find anything by them, but they are pretty cool
Slowcoaster is good. They're not really local, though. A band that went to my highscool called the Juice is good
I was in a semi-famous rock band here in Honduras for 3 years before I finally got tired of it. We have some recordings. A very good Israeli reggae group though is Kangooroo.
Go to http://www.amplifier.co.nz/ for more New Zealand music than you can shake a tambourine at... you can hear short clips of most stuff without joining, but if you do sign up (it's free) you can watch music vids and hear full songs...so worth it. for a taste of kiwi music that's in fashion right now the chart is always a good place to start... otherwise... for those with a taste in dub/reggae should checksout The Black Seeds, Fat Freddy's Drop (they should have some stuff on the chart), Katchafire, The WBC, The managers, trinity roots, Salmonella Dub. those who like more of a rock sound - Um The Checks are so hot right now...and they are pretty damn good for a band fresh out of high school (they just did a tour in England and spent some time in Hollywood). I saw them on wednesday - wow. They make me feel like having a mid-life crisis. The Mint Chicks are great too. then there's the more popular bands like The Datusuns, The D4 and so on.
My uncle used to be in a local band here in the U.P. of Mi. called Ironic. They kicked him out because of the drugs and alcohol and kept his songs and claim them as their own. They even have one of his songs that he wrote called Lovers Lane playing on the local radio station that they say that they wrote, they dont even acknowledge the fact that he wrote it. Thats weak but these guys have a lot of talent and they rock out anything from classic rock style, to metal. I just think that they should give credit where credit is due.
They should really put some mp3's or wma's up on their site if they can. I love hearing bands that arent discovered.
Pre-Crash DMB, The Grove, Victor Wooten, DJ Williams Projekt, Sun Dried Opossum, and Keller Williams. Heh. Odd... Virginia has been a breeding ground for a few good musicans.
