British Columbia = Liberal (open-minded) Alberta = Conservative (closed-minded) Manitoba = Conservative (closed-minded) Saskatchewan = Conservative (closed-minded) Ontario = Liberal (open-minded) Quebec = a bit of both due to French/British influences (Souther parts are Liberal, Northern parts Conservative) Other provinces, including North = Conservative (closed-minded) The most liberal cities in Canada: 1. Vancouver, BC 2. Toronto, ON 3. Montreal, QC PS: There is a debate, as some people believe that Montreal should get 2nd place on the list of the most liberal cities in Canada.
I don't know about Montreal being second place...the only thing they are open minded about is seperation. Thanks for the info though. love and peace to you
any basis for this? closed/open minded about what precisely? Some things SK is awful and close minded about, but really open minded about a lot of other things. Generalizations are usually about 99% bullshit anyways.
Quebec doesn't know what they want. Montreal isn't so pro-seperatist as the rest of them. A lot of English sectors in Montreal. I don't think you should just be pointing out the two parties either. I take pride that Canada now has 5 major parties....with a little help we won't feel obliged to bow to eithe conservatives or liberals. NDP are gaining alot of strength, and so are the green party. In the last election the green party got just enough votes to get them into the debates. While the BQ is just stupid, at least it's another option representing a larger part of the population. While I hate the conservatives, it's interesting to note that Alberta (as far as I've read) has the most thriving economy in Canada. Maybe a healthy mix is in order? That's why I like this minority gov. so much. Yes more squabbling, but more representation of the people which is what democracy is all about. It also seems lately that the Liberal party is just conservatives in disguise.
I think Nova Scotia is included in "Other provinces, including North" or else I'm missing out on something.
youre the closed minded one making such generalisations........what an idiotic list conservatives arent necessarily closed minded, and not all liberals are open minded and how can you make such conclusive statements about diverse cities such as Montreal and Toronto?? theyve got their fair share of those with their own opinions, its not a black and white world here
That's not at all true. I was born and raised primarily an Anglophone here in Montreal and it's one of the most open-minded cities I know of. It's extremely multi-cultural and the people are very friendly and unafraid to be themselves. I'm not at all afraid to roam the streets at night either, because most people mind their own business and are very laid-back. Montreal's the type of city where you can buy a bottle of wine at the corner store, bring it to the park and smoke a fatty with it in the middle of the afternoon. Quebec was the first province to demand a unionized Wal-Mart, which impressed me very much. Quebecers are wonderful, smart people on average, and very well-informed (RDI/Radio-Canada is IMO, one of the best news sources out there). It's easy to generalize based on our presumptions, but you'll never really know a culture until you experience it, and here in Montreal, there's plenty of it. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. As for the sovereignty issue, sure there are extremists who dislike the English, just as there are an equal amount of extremists who hate the French. The majority always suffers for the extremists. But not everyone is ignorant and most people are in fact, rather in touch with the cultural differences between French-Canadians and English-Canadians and embrace them instead. I'm proud to be a Quebecer because I think all-in-all, they're beautiful, open-minded people.
albert has the most thriving economy because they are sitting on millions of barrels of oil. their province is doing well economically in spite of ralph klein, not because of him.
Vancouver is pretty conservative, except for the whole shooting heroin on the streets thing. My personal opinion is that Montreal is the most liberal and cultural city despite the whole " Let's seperate" thing which really sorta has some sense to it... just hard to explain to ppl who think its a personal stab at Canada. Toronto is cool but lots more ppl suck here.
Seriously, people. When is everyone going to learn that the most liberal city in Canada is Regina, Saskatchewan! Where else can you steal a car in broad daylight without anyone stopping you or calling the cops?
Vancouver definately has the feel of being very open-minded... a more level-headed approach to the drug problem, a nudist beach... i definately think that the generalizations that started this thread are a bit of a joke... if you're referring to politics, basically most of Canada voted Conservative Party in the last federal election... Ontario saved our asses! I'm relatively new to BC and thought for sure the liberals would come out on top but i was wrong...conservatives won BC. Personally though, i take comfort in the idea that even a Canadian conservative can often be more 'liberal' thinking than many American democrats. That's not a fact...just my opinion... maybe it has something to do with the fact that the DEA, Texas Rangers, ATF and many more American agencies are actively trying to get involved in Vancouver's and Canada's politics of which the American government disapproves. The latest high profile arrest and extradition of Marc Emery (leader of the Marijuana political party and activist) due to pressure from the DEA is more evidence of America using it's clout to push around the ideas and laws of countries that don't agree with the boondoggle which is the american 'War On Drugs'. I cringe when i see spokespeople for the American government telling people that there are more people in rehab for marijuana than for all other drugs combined... long live the propoganda machine. So while we're at it, why not a generalized list of conservative countries, liberal countries...and of course conservative countries PRETENDING to be liberal?
"The most liberal cities in Canada" is a little unfair. You've listen some liberal MAJOR cities, but there are some much more liberal, smaller cities in Canada that shouldn't be overlooked.
perhaps a more accurate way to put it would be 'liberalism per capita'. I agree, some very liberal small towns but i would wonder what the difference between percentages of the population would be between a large city and a smaller town? I imagine some of the gulf islands (west coast) would be close to 100% liberal
Last weekend, one of my neighbors came over and she had grown up and Manitoba and her and my dad were drunk and my dad kepts sayin stuff about her bein a conservative redneck and she told us that she had voted liberal all her life and my dad (grew up in ontario) told us that he was conservative.....so i really dont think that you can generalise those provinces like that....it might be the majority but still
I live on the West Coast and we're pretty much all Liberal. Although, a lot vote NDP which is still sort of liberal... but more for supposed "working class". I don't like them because they're soooooo pro-union and unionised workers aren't exactly scraping the bottom of the barrel.. but whatever.
I don't think you can generalize liberalism or conservatism into such a broad thing as a province (or state) being either conservative or liberal. Even within the state or province, the cities may very widely. I think it's better to do it by city...in fact, I found an interesting site that shows the most liberal friendly and unfriendly cities in the US, which I found very interesting. Peace!
