Detroit found to be most liberal U.S. city

    Aug. 11, 2005 at 7:39AM

Detroit is the most liberal U.S. city while Provo, Utah, is the most conservative, a study of voting patterns indicates.
The list was compiled by the Bay Area Center for Voting Research in California through an examination of voting in 237 U.S. cities with populations of more than 100,000.
"Detroit and Provo epitomize America's political, economic and racial polarization," BACVR Director Jason Alderman said in a release Thursday. "As the most conservative city in America, Provo is overwhelmingly white and solidly middle class. This is in stark contrast to Detroit, which is impoverished, black and the most liberal."
Gary, Ind., was found to be the second-most liberal followed by Berkeley, Calif.; Washington; and Oakland, Calif. The group that did the ranking is based in Berkeley, not far from Oakland.
Texas, home to President George Bush, has three of the five most conservative cities, as determined by BACVR, including Lubbock and Abilene in the Nos. 2 and 3 spots and Plano in the fifth spot. Hialeah, Fla., was ranked fourth.
BACVR offered no detailed breakdown of its methodology.

i see texas changing pretty quickly, since it's now the 3rd state in which a "minority" group is not the "majority." pretty nifty. exciting times.

*Giggles* I wish Detroit was the MOST liberal...this must be talking specifically about political wings because I know when I walk through that town with my dreadies, piercings and tattoos, I sure do get a lot of strange looks!

yeah, i think it's political leanings. stylistic leanings are an entirely different deal. but then, the way a person looks and what they believe are not necessarily in sync. people meeting me always think i'm super liberal, which is totally not the case at all. i'm only liberal in a few areas.

Liberal=socialist in the context your speaking of..

see sad fact is its possible to be a true liberal in every sence of the word an still not be a socialist.. if ya read the article ,, it says poor unemployed blah blah..

why dont ya check what the per capita welfare rates are in those two cities compared to the rest of the country,, bet ya its off the scale,, an then check the percentage of registered democrats on welfare ,,...

there ya go,, two cities fulla lazy system abusers,,, an they callem "liberal"... spare me..

wow, i live in the 2nd most conservative city in the U.S.

our hispanic population is larger than all others in the town, but I don't think that's going to make a difference as far as political views since the majority lean pretty far to the right, as most of the ppl here do, obviously...

    interesting article kc

hippiehillbilly socialism is on the left side of the scale... perhaps more liberal than the democratic party of the u.s. but still both on the same side, right?

Both are majority black cities, who usually are pretty hardcore democratic voters, and of course Utah is filled with mormons who come from a more conservative planet than Earth.

Gary Indiana sucks, although my wife and I won 800 dollars in 20 minutes at a casino there last time we went to Chicago.

yes perhaps more than the democratic party but thats all system abusers got in this country.. funny thing is a lot of folks dont even know that during the opression of black folks in this country it was the democrats doin it,,an the republicans that stopped it.. for the most part...

    go figure....

well a democrat, Johnson, signed the civil rights act...and was quoted as saying that the south would no longer belong to the democrats afterwards....but of course there are racists in all walks of life, north and south.

ehh, I can't really agree...the most racism I've probably encountered were in Georgia, and Seattle....pretty even.....for some reason it pissed me off more in Seattle though, mostly because the people there have only seen 1 black person and 2 jews in their boring lives...

I forgot Florida, that state is seemingly one of the most racist in the south, 'course I've never been to Alabama or Mississippi.
