For those of us who are well aware of global warming, an ominous new sign has appeared! The Siberian permafrost is melting. This is expected to release so much methane into the atmosphere that it will further accelerate global warming 15-25%. And it's happening fast. Already there are hotspots in Siberia where there is so much methane being released that the ground no longer freezes. This allows the ground to dry out and warm up even further, accelerating the release of methane. And scientists say it's probably too late to do anything about it.

I had been concerned about reports that said the methane frozen under the sea would soon be released as the seas warm up. But this is already happening in Siberia, so the "tipping point" has now been reached, a point of no return for our planet's ecology.

We are doomed to be poisoned by our own apathy. Thanks Bush!

    Here's the story:

Oh yea, and I saw a story about an inuit community I think it was right around the arctic circle. The whole town is considering evacuation due to the glaciers breaking off and threatening thier homes.

But there's parts of the planet getting a lot colder. Go figure.

Maybe they can farm the newly unfrozen land and feed the starving children in wherever. :D As it says, it's too late to do anything about it, so why worry?

Ha, further signs of a massive global environmental shift...the warming of the oceans etc.

There are natural trends in frequency of hurricanes and temperature...but how could their not be global warming...how could there not be repercussions from the industrial revolution and the exponential increase in the use of fossil fuels?

Why is it so hard to believe?

this is scary. and sad. :(

  10. but if we reached this point in only 5 years of bush's reign is there anything someone else could have done?

5 years is a short period of time on a geologic time scale, that says to me that even if america had completly stopped 100% of all greenhouse emissions in 8-10 years this still would have been happening

I feel utter disdain for bush, don't get me wrong, but isn't this all of our faults? all of humanity, everyone who wasted any energy, the person who looked at the muscle car and said "damn that's sexy" as much as the man who dumps all of his factories spare emissions illegally

picking scapegoats is how we got here........

Yes, well the problem has been a failure of leadership to address the issues, and lead the world in protecting our future. That the human race itself is now threatened is the biggest crime against humanity I can possible imagine.

America doesn't rule the world. But we can blame it for the environmental pollution.

i remember seeing a 2 second mention on the news a few years back about some tiny country of only 500,000 people somewhere that was completely abandoning the country due to global warming & rising seas..it scared the hell out of me but was never mentioned again & seemed the story was completely burried..things are definately accelerating like craxzy now....but as long as business & $ drives the descisions of governments it will conntinue getting worse

To quote George Carlin "the Earth isn't going anywhere, we are"

No one is saying its all Americas fault, but this non-progressive regime that we find ourselves under right now is not exactly helping matters either, its not ALL their fault, but at least they could be listening to the scientists not involved with the oil industry.....meanwhile we'll continue to try to breathe under the ever thinning atmosphere.

Um, okay. Sure. You tell that to the people getting flooded out of their homes due to the rising oceans levels. The odd and extreme weather patterns occuring throughout the world are probably nothing. Just one of those 'odd summers', right? The massive earthquake causing that tsunami was inprecedented in records, according to actual scientists. The number of tropical storms are also unprecedented here in the US. We've received 9 so far, some of them being hurricanes, where normally there are only 2 by this point. How about the most extreme monsoon to hit bombay, flooding the streets in less than an hour and killing nearly 1000 people in its flood?

You argue that with scientists that are -watching- the gulf current slow down dramatically. Ocean current greatly influences weather and gives us the seasons as they usually are. With the current stopping due to 'new' cold water melted from the caps, we're in for some changes. The changes are occurring now.

I can even be an eye-witness to it. When I was young, the seasons were the seasons, and there were no major and consitant abnormalities. Now there are. We can now have a snow storm in the winter time with expected spring temperatures the next day. I remember shoveling here, in NY, and having to take off my coat because I was sweating. It was actually warm. As in, spring warm. It got cold again, sure, but where'd that come from? Okay, sure.. just one time... but this isn't the first. It's been happening more and more often. Summer's finally hot again, but the past few have been oddly cool. This is just some of my experience. Nobody knows what to expect from the seasons anymore.

Oh. Yeah... A tornado recently apparently formed on Long Island. Odd, eh? I'm not saying a major catastrophe is at hand, but it -could- be. More water = more humidity in atmosphere = bigger and badder storms. So, yeah, things are going to get more difficult for us for sure... Earth is going to change quite a bit, but it won't necessarily wipe us into extinction. Let's wait and see what else nature may unfold.

But it's all a crock 'a shit. No worries. Keep doing what you were doing. Nothing is going to happen to us. Earth will stay the same forever... Forget what science tells you. Hush hush. Everything's gonna be okay.
