I want to go vegan and have recently given up eggs and started drinking soy milk. My mom said that if I ever want to drink milk again(I doubt I will) I could become lactose intolerant from lack of milk drinking. I don't think this is true because you wouldn't stop making the enzyme just because you aren't using it, right? I just want to prove her wrong, lol!

Nope, I never heard of that, though it is possible to become lactose intolerant. I am now, but I don't think it was from lack of drinking milk, which I did fairly often. It just kind of happened. I'd get stomach cramps and super gassy and that was it, no more milk for me!

    Bright Blessings!

Perhaps not full blown lactose intollerant, but it'll be a shock to the system.

Milk is the hardest thing to digest anyway, so when that hits after however long your stomach will be like WTF! and has to work harder, being out of practise.
It will get digested, just takes a while and you will feel like shit.

That happened to me. I gave up outright consuming milk in favour of soya milk. Then a few months later didn't think and had a [dairy] milkshake. Felt sick after twenty minutes and that carried on for hours.
Am now terrified of milk :)

That was without going vegan, just not drinking milk (I still eat cheese etc, so that whole thing was a real suprise).
My Mum and brother are slightly lactose intollerant too.

also i think you should worry less about proving her wrong... and do what you want to do.

if you dont ever plan on drinking milk again-- then dont worry about it.

since I stopped having milk products, i have been feeling so much better, & have mer energy, in the long run it's so good and healthy. And beeing intolerant? i don't think so! for me it's the contrary, I was slightly intolerant before, and now, if i do eat some milk product anyway, it is not a problem, so listen carefully to your body (and not your cravings or your mom), you'll see, you'll feel great

You won't be lactose intolerant, but if you've been vegan for a long time you may have an adverse reaction to drinking it simply because you're body has long since cleansed itself of that junk. Same thing with meat- if you're a vegetarian for a long time and someone accidently puts meat in your food, you'll probably puke.
This isn't a bad thing! It means you're body has detoxed itself. There are so many harsh, unatural ingredients in commercial meat and dairy, but since many people eat them on a daily basis, their bodies become used to it and don't show external signs of irritation.
