Nuts one of the most calorie-packed foods you can take. That means less weight to carry. With lots of protein and other nutritonal benefits, nuts are my favorite backpacking food. I'm collecting ideas for my site here, so what are your favorites, and why? Steve http://www.TheBackpackingSite.com
There's a great book called Lipsmackin' Backpackin' by Tim & Christine Conners that has lots of great ideas and recipes. You should look for it. I found it at my library.
When I go for a single night, or on the first nite of a multiple-day hike, I like to mix a foil packet of tuna with a package of Pasta-Roni or something like that. It's enough for 2 people and costs a couple bucks.
raman noodles and jerky... just throw the jerky(chopped up of course) in the water before ya heat it up,, then do yer ramen as ya always would.. KILLER! light weight easy pack meal..
beef jerky,, pemicken,, dried beef,, hell i supposse chipped beef would work but dried in a bag is easier to tote..
Instant Cream of wheat an coffee for breakfast. GORP for lunch. Rice cakes, Mac n cheese, instant rice, and the like for supper.
We make our own special mix. Based on the GORP idea (granola, oats, rasins, peanuts). We take a bunch of mixed nuts, rasins, and m&m's in a bag and we're good to go. That's good shit right there. A great meal is tuna noodle. Cook some noodles, add a package of tuna, and throw some cheese in there. Thats more good shit right there. Instant soup (raman noodles, etc) are great for lunch. Boil some water, pour in the noodle package, and in a few minutes you're good to go. Make sure to bust up all the noodles first, it's easier to eat than when they're long. A good method of cooking is "freezer bag cooking" as outlined in the following website. Basically it's using boiling water poured in a freezer bag containing the food. The site is updated with new recipies pretty often. http://www.freezerbagcooking.com/index.htm
Hot chocolate is also good in the mornings. That was the best part of waking up in the mornings when me and my family were camping in the Smokies. (During this trip, we were the only people on the campground using a tent... everyone else had RV's. Failures. But they had really clean bathrooms, so that was a plus.)
i used to dry spaghetti sauce (with meat in it) in a food dryer - that was good, and didnt weigh anything. and pork chops taste great cooked over a campfire for some reason.
Does vodka count as a food. Have some astronaut food pills. Has all the important vitamins, minerals, protein, etc. About 6 of them is a whole meal.
