So we were looking for a dread shop to maybe do a little maintenance or just give us some pointers on my hair Saturday and went to a braid shop. Well we walk in and all mouths drop to the floor and this woman tells me "You can not have dreads because your hair is not nappy" I asked her how come I see white people without nappy hair with dreads all the time......... and she told me again that I cant have dreads without nappy hair. So I think she pretty much meant that she couldnt work on me cuz I am not black and that white people cant have dreads but didnt want to flat out say it. So I wonder what these locks are doing in the front of my hair since I am white according to her they must not be dreads. She should just put up a sign saying "i dont do white hair" if she is going to be that rude to every white person who comes into her shop. Instead of immediately talking shit about me to the other stylist in another language right in front of my face.

Finally I went to a place called naturally locs and got a consulation for Tuesday morning, If they dont twist em or anything for me I will still buy shampoo and oils there, everything they sold was natural and all smelled so gooood and they were super nice to me!

You should say to her that dreadlocks are knotted hair.... and all hair knotts.

and that in the same concept she should tell all of her friends she knows who STRAIGHTEN their 'nappy' hair and put blonde extensions in or straght extensions that maybe THEY should stick to THEIR own hair styles. ::eyeroll::

I cnat have dreads, they wont stay. when I tried they would fall out when I jumped in the river. closest I got was riding from Mountainview CA to RiversideCA in the back of a pick od try, no ponytail, but all my hair tucked up in a newsboy hat...but then it was all one big dread and two applications of conditioner and I could comb it out.

i am just wondering if she knows of the celts and fairy locks =) cuz i wold like to think the scotch and irish are rather white folk LOL and they grew locks! it was even cosiderd bad luck to comb them out.

and fleassy, she was straightening a girls hair when i walked in, HAHA I felt so bad whwen I left because i try to be open minded with everyone but she was so ignorant i wanted to knock her twisties out of her head........

What you need to do is to write a letter into her shop complaining about a racist comment. Explain what happened, explain how it made you feel and explain that you are a beleiver in equals. Even do a bit of research on drealock traditions OUTSIDE the rastafari culture (like what you just included) and include it. Not in a mean way but play the part of the bewildered victim. Tell them you think it was incredibly unfair the way she treated you and you would never DREAM of saying such things to anyone else.

Give them a bit of a guilt trip. To be honest chances are they've recieved racist comments in their life time (sadly) so hopefully they will realise their actions and parhaps feel a bit guilty.

I am so excited about my hair now. i WENT TO A good DREAD SHOP TODAY AND THE LADIES WERE WONDERFUL. Every product was all natural and I got a scalp antiseptic fo help with the itchies and to clean the flakes off =) and I got this oil that smells wonderful to keep me smelling fresh. She told us exactly how to train my hair to lock up and let me know they were doing fine! She even gave me a card and told me to call her and let her know how they are doing. Both women in the shop had beautiful dreads and they were so nice......................

Its good that you found a decent shop. It would be no good to return her racist remark with another. I think calling her supervisor or someone above her position would be the just thing to do

Wow, that would be upsetting. You probably handeled it very well, good job. That does kind of make you think though.. how many other people look at white people with dreads and think "What a joke"? It doesn't matter though, because you do your dreads for you.

And dreadlocks are just knotts.. anyone of any skin colour can have knotts in their hair.

I said because i love locks he then mutterd something in Jamacan
& buggered off, I was like W.T.F !!!! It's hapened to be before as well

I was in Maccy D's & some black woman said why do I have locks
I said because I like them, & she said I couldn't have locks because
I was white . I'm not racist in the slightest but because of people like
