apparently, like most else these days, the headphone market is extremely complex and full of crazy terminology. i'm a novice, but id like to learn more, because i want to make a wise purchase.

what i want: phones that create excellent sound quality, limits outside noise, is comfortabled, looks nice, and is under, say, $120. They do not need to be proffesional quality or anything

i tried out these http://www.djmart.com/djgear/sonymdrv500dj.html since my friend has a pair, and i love em. but someone else recommended the next model up, http://www.djmart.com/djgear/sonymdr.html for whatever reason.

    -should i buy off ebay
-what exactly does noise cancelling mean, and how effective is it? is it circutry that counteracts outside, repetitive noise, or just mean real fat earcup padding?
-is sony good, or should i invest in one of the top brands
-what do you think of the above links

    cheers

Sennheiser is my favorite company. They make great noise cancelling headphones. Noise cancelling basically means, once you have the headphones on you cant hear nothing outside of them, even with the music off! Whatever your choice is, i hope you get the fat earcup padding that covers your whole ear. Here is Sennheisers site just for your viewing to get an idea. http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite/category.asp?transid=cat7
ive got the HD515s and there amazing. I also do online gaming thats why i go with sennheiser.

yeah I use Sennheiser too, I've got a pair of HD447's , Sennheiser is one of the best you'll get at a given price bracket, so even if you buy relatively cheap ones like mine they still sound very good

I have a pair of those sony headphones, and they’re great… for dj’ing! They’re very bright sounding and don’t have the greatest bass response, and the noise canceling is sub-par. There’s another model that’s about $40 more that’s much better, but again, those are made for dj’s. They’ve got that swivel on them that sure likes to break… if they last you more than two years then you’ve been really careful with them.

I’ve also got a set of Sennheisser HD580’s, and they blow the sony’s out of the water, the difference is beyond description; but yeah, they’re a little more pricey. I’d recommend something in their entertainment line… there are some comfortable headphones with a full bodied sound, right about the same price as the Sony’s.

im not positive but i think noise cancelling works by the headphones emmiting a sound or something and yea, you can still hear things but theyre just a lot quieter.

I only want Beyerdynamic headphones. Beyerdynamic is a headphone technology pioneer. Milestones in beyerdynamic's history have been established reference products. And beyerdynamic employs the know-how it has gained to develop new products both for professional applications and home entertainment. If you only knew how bad most sealed headphones are, you'd really be amazed at how Beyerdynamic consistently delivers good ones. You'd also be blown away that they managed to make a inexpensive pair of sealed headphones that sound as good as the DT 231. Though ever so slightly lacking in the mids, these cans provide clear, non-flabby, non-bloated bass, as well as extended highs that lack the harshness usually found in cheap headphones. Additionally, none of the honky resonance usually found in low-cost sealed headphones is present. That’s a lot of double negatives; these headphones are very competent sounding. Style-wise, they're pretty ordinary: plastic throughout, with soft, fuzzy ear pads, and a small but comfortable supra-aural ear cup. All-in-all, the standout in not only budget headphones, but in the entire sub-$100 category.

whoever would have thought that you could have a whole conversation on head phones?

personally i'd go for the really cheap ones that don't noise cancel or whatever and just turn em up real loud!

yeah the noise cancelling ones have little microphones on the outside that gets amplified and the wave is inverted to cancel out and fed through the earpiece.
