Or are other areas being contaminated with pesticides because of the possibility of someone contracting West Nile Virus? And how do we fight this?
I know they're freakin out in So Cal too. I don't know if we can fight this. Whats going down in Sacramento? Are they causing problems with it?
usually, the method used on mosquitoes for WNV is BT, bactotherigesis (check spelling on that) and what it does is interfere with larval production, I think by making it tough for the larvae to eat. Having been through a "bag worm" plague and three years of WNV, I think it is the only large scale application that works. BT is left in standing water only. Mosquitoes cannot develop in fast-moving water. The down side is if it is spread too far and wide (beyond standing water) it can interfere with other larval development such as butterflies. Supplying daily fresh or moving water for the other insects will greatly offset this effect.
that would make more sense if they were doing that but that is not what they're doing, they're spraying the entire area, not just standing water, and advising people to stay inside etc. take precaution because it's dangerous for people, but it's also dangerous for wildlife and they can't 'stay inside'
Its a one day thing, that is supposed to deal with existing mosquitoes and recent outbreaks of West Nile. I find it odd that they are asking half of Sacramento County to stay indoors and turn off their AC or other air intakes. (Its 100° today.) Good Luck.
i haven't eaten any bananas.. i guess that attracts them to bite you. no bug bites yet this year. i haven't seen any dead birds or anyone spraying more than what i normally see here.
is this the first year for Cali or year 2? I know the burgs use diesel oil to coat water so the larvae cannot hatch. After a kill for adults, there is no need to do it again unless the municipality/county does not use larvacide. Bring it to their attention.
