what to look for in portable music (i pod, mp3 player, ect.)?

I'd suggest checking out the Creative Zen Touch series. They do a 20 gig and 40 gig version. I'm planning on getting the 20 gig version next week and its gonna cost me £150 from Amazon. I dunno what that is in $ but its a very good price for the UK! Check out the 40 gig one I suggest, will give you more than enough space (and is the same size as the harddrive on my laptop )
