i know that a forum as diverse & creative as this one has to have a few peeps that have SOME input for this... i'd like to see some practical, yet comfortable & attractive skirts intended for the male consumer. they would have to be varying lengths, although i'd bet the average guy would opt for longer rather than shorter. .................................................................................................... what i'm NOT interested in: typical kilts (if you can come up with something truly different, though...) flowery/frilly/effeminate fetish wear .................................................................................................... i'm interested in something to attract the fairly AVERAGE consumer. he's gonna need to use the bathroom standing up. he's likely to need a place to put his keys/wallet/stuff, so pockets or a reasonable replacement will be popular. he's NOT gonna want to spend more money on a skirt than on a pair of pants. dressy pants=$80. knock-around jeans=$30. that should provide some fair ideas for cost. they should be intended for different purposes. the skirt for "going-out-looking-good" won't be the same skirt as "digging-in-the-garden,going-fishing". stylish. unique. impressive. any ideas? r1g0r
hmmm....that is a different thought. I actually don't see anything wrong with it though. I guess a man's skirt would be a lot looser, because women's skirts often tend to be to show figures, at least slim ones. I geuss they would have the same qualitys as men's pants: loose, simple, kind of baggy in the butt, with belt loops for a belt. But that's just my two cents.
Yeah, there's alot of skirts that have a fly/zipper in the front. For a different spin on the pockets, you could sew hidden pockets on the inside. I have a movie that shows men waiters in long sarong-like skirts(it was based in a tropical vacation type setting), but they were full length and looked like wrap-around skirts.
Is there really a demand for this kind of thing? I mean, I know that there are some skirt-wearing men out there, but they'd usually just wear women's skirts. I always thought that was kinda the point of it all.
Take a look at utilikilt.com for some non-traditional ideas. They are above the price range described. For my skirts, I go to SPCA used store and buy a calf length 5-pocket jean skirt. (No, I don't wear them in public, but they are comfy around the house and yard.) I sometimes need to open the side seams a few inches so I can walk with my normal stride.
i've seen utilikilts, and i've seen the guys-wearing-girls-skirts thing, and of course the crossdressers. what i'm after is the skirt that'll make guys think "you know, i LIKE that...i'll buy it, even if my friends DON'T understand" penises (penii?) and testicles need a varying environment to stay healthy, even more than vaginas do. there are a growing number of men who wear skirts/kilts/sarongs/etc and can attest to the benefits. what i'm thinking of is a way to get mr joe average to think about wearing the garment that makes the most below-the-belt sense for guys. plus, there's always the added effect it has on women. my wife is ALWAYS grabbing me if i wear a kilt. this has got to be applicable to the average 20/30-something guy on the street. i want to see something creative, i thought this forum was the place to find it. r1g0r
I like the utility kilts and have a few guy friends that rock them. I think the thing that some complain of is the length, they'd actually like them to be longer. So, if you're planning on trying your hand at making some maybe try doing them in different lengths and different weights of fabric too.
maybe something long and earthy with cargo pockets and a zipper or button fly for peeing???????????? In browns and khahis and olive drabs??????? are we talking patchy or just skirty?
OK, I had a discussion with a musician friend (40 yrs) about a blue African skirt he has and wears. Here are comments that could light your cerebreal fire: I have to wear it with brown leather sandals ( a "look" was being sought, and regular foot wear won't do. I THINK leather was a tease to my veggie self, or he could have meant he wanted traditional footwear). It keeps everything cool and we are trying for another (child). It doesn't look girly at all. So, here is the image I got (I've not seen the garment): think like a sarong in size: I think flowing will trip men's girly trigger, and I see it longer rather than shorter. I see this gorgeous blue with a band of decor at the bottom, and a fabric that was elegantly masculine. Now, for a sale market, realize only so many sorts of guys will consider this until a friend wears one, and then that is still a small market. Play on fertility! avoid looking like "yoga yuppie" women, too. some part of the construction design or the visual design will have to mirror a masculine theme: color, fabric (i'd stay short of denim, myself, denim is a cumbersome fabric) You have to think how shirts will work: maybe evelop a modified kurta or dashiki? Look to the subcontinent, Africa and the Pacific islands. really think about a waistline: even if men are wearing an untucked shirt, the possibility of a more formal look is important in making the sale. Considered gauchos? Split skirt? carry both and you could get more customers, maybe a transition market. think about underclothing: how could it be eliminated? mesh like swim trunks have? Hope this puts some cayenne on your brain! let us know how it goes.
i have many male friends who wear skirts..and all of us sewing mama's make them for our guys.... usually they are cord patchwork in earthy colors w/ large cargo pockets...and or denim... here i'll even include a pic of rescue roy from the louisville crew wearing the heady skirt the talented seamstress amanda made ...
Haha, I have a skirt made from India, rayon, drawstring waist, you know very light material, it's ankle length, not very wide but flowy and lots of folds since its got a wide waist and my partner loves it and wishes he wouldn't get beak up for wearing it on the streets of hickville, maryland. There definately is a market for it. And he also loves my tie dye dress I have too, also ankle length. Namaste Francine
My men are looking for the flowy kind of elasticized waist broomstick skirts. They play frisbee in them and wander around town, drawing looks. On campus it's not really a big deal anymore, because people who are comfortable with it smile and people who aren't ignore the guys. But for the guys I know, it's about the comfort and ease of putting them on, too. so just a pull straight-up and it'll stay on skirt is kind of what they're going for. But the long length is a must.
What about looking through the history books? Men didn't wear pants at all in the 15th century.... You could modernize the old styles, and add a belt with a pouch for his wallet and such. I like the look of caftans as well.
