Back from a lecture on what the French call le Dahu, I wondered if you have something similar in other european countries, United States and Australia ?

In France and Switzerland and Germany: a group of people (students or workers) would tell one of the new persons of their group to join them and hunt the Dahu. An amazing animal (one species, in the mountains, has two shorter legs in order to walk on the sides of the mountains, but there are other species too). So the people, after telling the poor guy (lady) how wonderful is this Dahut, would go with him in a forest after midnight and... lose him!
They would say afterwards it's a way to stop him from being goolible."Initiatic" they pretend!

Have you got something similar in your country ? The lady who is studying this theme all over Europe never thought that some people COULD actually meet "fantastic animals" and a friend told her that some did (specially in England and Australia) before they were caught by the stupid materialistic mind.
I know that Australian and English people (kids and grown ups) could actually see fairies... and some of my friends saw Unicorns in France !
If you can find time to tell a few things about " IT", that would be great. Thanks a lot in advance for your replies.

In Scotland tour guides tell gullible tourists about the 'Haggis' which is the same as the dahu (mountain species with two short legs).

There is an enormous number of 'cryptozoology' sites and publications devoted to finding creatures widely thought not to exist.

Snipe hunt is the appropriate american lore used to lure the newbie into the forest late at night only to be abandoned, the snipe is a wondrous hard to catch mythical creature that has been said to endow secret blessings on its captor.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

I've been to Scotland and never heard of that.

Well actually I did hear of haggis, as in the food. :)

Thinking of Scotland, what about Loch ness. The Irish have plenty of mythology along those lines too. Leprecuans (sp) and such.

I heard a tour guide do it to some poor suckers. To the point of braking the van and pointing to one in the bushes (Japanses tourists with cameras out). I think humiating a paying customer like that goes a bit to far. not their fault they don't know what a haggis is and isn't.

The proper way to ensnare a snipe is to wait quietly in the bushes with a bag. You then wait until your buddies drive a snipe straight at you, for the poor thing is a flightless-blind-birdlike-mammillian creature about thIS BIg, that will allow itself to be easily captured by a drunken foo- er, ah- hunter with a bag.

    Now wait here quietly...
