I do hate them. I need to get some good cloth bags. In the mean time... I do reuse them for the dog, small trash baskets, and they are great for picking up trash when you walk through parks or go backpacking. Those not reused get recycled.

The bags are an issue, but what gets me is the amount of sub-packaging there is. A plastic liner insidea blisterpack that the retailer got in a cardboard box of 12 units, that the wholesaler got in a case of 24.

I buy rice that comes in plastic bags inside of cloth bags. I use the cloth bags. Its kind of fun to watch the responce when I say neither paper nor plastic.

Tom Robbins once noted that the plain paper bag was the only piece of trash that fit in with natural scenery. (He said it better.)
