Ten miles from Emerald Isle, here. :D High season's starting to kick in...58's a mess, and 24 is crowding up on weekends. Anybody go to T&W's Oyster Bar? Best seafood on the Outer Banks, man...Right down the road from my house. :)

Two years ago. :D I haven't been down there since. I'm heading to Emerald Isle next month. We quit going to Hatteras Island after all the bad hurricanes. Hatteras Island Resort in Rodanthe saw its last breath during Isabel and it would just be too depressing to go back. I was in Rodanthe when Isabel struck and it was insane. I surfed for a bit. Floyd was bad too... we were down there then and I remember a culvert in the road washed out and we drove our truck over it and were almost swept away.

I've never really been one to enjoy evacuating hurricanes. I prefer riding them out.

    Hey ya Orsino,
Being the typical money hungry developers they are, more sand gets hauled in
and no doubt new salt boxes go up. Guess growing up with hurricanes I'm used
to riding them out too. I usually stay unless it's a 3 or better. When the kids
were small they worried me a little more. I've had my share of spending days surround
by water. No fun when they just sit on top of ya.
I hear ya on the riding through tide part. Peeps just have to be careful and use
good common sense. Thing is people who aren't used to this area or hurricanes
often want to stay for one. They really don't realize what could happen and not
to mention when the storm is over it's the ones from here who depend on the
supplies where those who are from other places really need to evacuate.
I remember working for a realty company and we went around telling the
renters that it was manditory that they leave. I knocked on a door and a woman
with two children said "But we have two small children and it will be to much
of a hassel to leave" ! I then went on to tell her if she thought leaving was to
much of a hassel try getting cut off from the mainland, no power, no food,
etc etc. She changed her mind quick after she heard it in that perspective.
Oh well, that's the way it goes.

Yeah, I live near the water on a peninsula, as it is up here in Virginia. I've seen the water level rise and fill our basement during a hurricane and we end up having to pump it out. I don't know who had the absolute genius idea of putting a basement in a house that sits at 5-7 feet sea level.

Not really. It stays dry all the time... it's just when we get a bad year and there's a lot of hurricanes. The water seems to be really warm on the beaches this year, I just went down to Kill Devil Hills last week and went swimming after a concert in Norfolk. I also stopped and got a surfboard I left down there from a friend and tried it out at like 3am...

I moved to Asheville from cold, cold Connecticut in October ... since I was a winging it a little with the relocation, finding a place to live, a job, etc have been consuming most of my last couple of months.
I'm kinda settled in now ... and I LOVE Asheville, but I don't have many friends here yet, so if anyone wants to gimme a holler, that would be very groovy.
I like hanging out, going to concerts, drum circles, dancing, hiking, astology, good talks, activism, etc.

    Peace,
    Ryvr
