Janis of course, Indigo Girls, Inkubus Sukkubus, Dar Williams, Aimee Mann, Joni Mitchell, Joan Osbourne, Eliza Carthy, Kate Bush, Kristen Hersh.

Ok, ok... not all are/have been in bands but they all more than deserve a mention! :)

Rachel from late Sinister has double the vocal brutality and triple the I'm-going-to-kick-your-ass factor of Angela Gossow.

Honestly, I can't stand that woman's voice. What a waste of sound waves.

    Autumn is muuuch better, methinks.

no one has mentioned ani difranco - her voice and guitar skills are amazing.

i would also have to go with joni mitchell - a classic.

The best? IMHO it's The Eurythmics and Curved Air. The vocalist for Curved Air had a really great voice, and their first album ("air conditioning") is a real gem. And when she chooses too no one can sing like Annie Lennox.
