Hi, i've been interested in yoga for quite awhile, although I don't seem to have enough time or money to take real yoga classes. Can I just learn it on my own? Where should I start? I'd like to wake up in the morning and do some basic yoga stretches/positions, and also during stressful study periods to help relax. I'm not very flexible nor am I in very good shape, but I've heard that yoga will not only help my mental state and my stress levels (will it help my posture too, it's horrible), but also my flexibility. It would be great to find some basic beginner positions to do. I've checked the downtown library and they had some books there but they were taken out. Can't really seem to find any places on the net really that I don't have to pay for. Any advice?

http://www.yogajournal.com/ I've never been to a yoga class but have always been doing my own private practise. I suggest the link above. They have many things on beginning yoga, what style is good for you...really nice stuff about starting out. I also suggest investing on yoga magizines. Usually they have articles about asanas, philosiphy (sp?) and information on other styles of yoga. If you can find 20 minutes right when you wake up in the morning then you have enough time to do yoga. I suggest learning Sun Salutation. Most yoga programs will start off with this. It's one of the essentals to any yoga practise. Try out poses and if you have a hard time preforming a pose DON'T GIVE UP! I personally have a lot of problems with back bends so I dedicate one day a week to poses that will allow me to perform better back bends. Yoga is a great thing and the more you discipline yourself the more you will get out of it. I hope I didn't scare you away...lol...have a rainbow day.
if i were you i'd sit in on a college yoga class and learn some basics. i don't know how the schools are where you are but where i'm from i know i could go in there and the teacher wouldn't even know i wasn't part of her class. i've had my friends do it before and honestly i think if you got caught the teacher would be happy that you're trying to get into it and just let you. there's so many awesome poses that you could do but it's hard to explain without showing. like the sun salutation is one of my favorites and it has a lot of steps so i couldn't really explain it good. i bought a book called, The Everything Yoga Book and it's awesome. i know you didn't want to spend any money but if you want i could even make copies of some of the poses and send them to you. i think yoga is the answer to sooooo many problems and i'll help anyone out as much as i can so just let me know.
oh awesome! thank you for the advice! I have a lot of health problems and think it could be helpful for me physically. As far as I know there isnt any yoga classes offered at the college I go to, there's a yoga studio downtown but they're !@#$%&* expensive. I'm thinking I'll hit up the library again and see what I can find. No one around here that I know does yoga... Thanks for the links too!
