I honestly don't see how they can be expected to disclose more information at this point. The investigation may well lead to criminal charges being brought against one or more police officers, and any speculation or discussion in the media could be seen as prejudicing future trials, thus undermining the reliability of a jury verdict.

I suspect it was all a tragic mistake.

Sergeant: Oi. You. Shoot down the indian and grab me a curry will ya?
    BANG x 7
Officer: Sorry sarge, he wasn't carrying a curry!

And today it emerges they've shot a suspect with a taser gun.

Sergeant: Right. No mistakes this time. I'd like a fry-up!
    Dddzzzzzzzzzzzzzzssssssstttt.
    Officer: Howzat?

    ;)

I would argue that any innocent man being victim of a summary execution at the hands of the people who supposed to be protecting him is a fuck up. No matter what the inquiry discovers or reveals. Even the plod have admitted they fucked up.

What we are waiting to learn is why a fuck up like this happened, who is responisble and what will be done about it.

I'm more disturbed about how the police commisioner apologised but said that more innocent people could go the same way ... some apology. "Yeah we were wrong but we don't really care and we'll do it again"

Depends on your definition of a fuck up. If they had reasonable grounds for suspecting he was about to kill people, then it's not a fuck up in my book. It's a regrettable mistake. What remains to be seen is whether the police had reasonable grounds for feeling that he represented a clear and present threat to the life of others. If they didn't (and at this stage, I'd be surprised if they did!), then it was a fuck up by my definition. I'm prepared to wait for the facts to emerge though.

I'm no great fan of the filth, but I think they're in a pretty impossible position at the moment. What kind of criticism would they be in for if they practised more restraint, but the next time they hold fire someone blows up a train full of people? I'm not saying they were right or wrong on this occasion, but it seems to me like they're caught between a rock and a hard place.

Yep ... it's a tough call. I wouldn't like to be making that choice right now.

Wow, I clicked on this thread expecting a torrent of idiotic police-bashing, but I've been pleasantly surprised. In fact, Doc, you seem to surprise me a lot! :) :)

Good to see there are some sane people round here! ;)

Why would you expect 'idiotic police-bashing'?

It's not like the police are corrupt, violent, gun happy, racist, and the scum of the earth now is it?:$

No, of course not. But you seem to be implying that they are. Care to elaborate?

Nah, better things to do than go over the long long lists of miscarriages of justice, fit up's, racial abuse and deaths in custody not to mention all those shot for fuck all, in the last 150 years or so of the history of the British Police.

    I'm already on anti-depressants thanks.

Suffice to say it's a crying shame our communities have forgotten how to treat a 'Peeler'....with a swift but firm boot up the arse and the appropriate language to send them on their way back to from whence they came. Ah the good old days......

It would be nice if PC Plod could walk about with his portly belly and rosey cheeks, from the little glass of sherry off that sweet little granny from No. 72...Whistling 'roll out the barrels' as he swings his truncheon down letsby avenue 'ah the good old days' what a load of old cobbles...

I think something like 3 people die in custody every week ... obviously not all because they got a good kicking, but they haven't exactly lived up to being the kind and caring protectors of society that they supposed to be.
