Can anyone direct me as to where to start to get into this? I'm always so entranced by it and think it's something I would thoroughly enjoy doing... Not sure if this is the right place to post this but seems close enough for me :p

    Heya.
Well you learn to walk before you run. Star with either tail poi (sometimes calledpractive poi) or sock poi.

Sock poi you make with a simple pair of long socks and a tennis ball in the toe of each.

For instructions on how to learn simple moves... well i learnt from friends, poisters are always up for teaching. And if that fails then www.homeofpoi.com have some good tuition videos that might help you.

I love it i started about 3 years ago and now spin fire for festivals and shows as well as occasionall teach others with a company called trickswap.

heehee, we used to do poi dances in primary school (only with the more traditionally based, Maori poi, not the firey ones :p)

however, our methods of making them wasn't very traditional - we'd make them from plastic bags and newspapers (you cut several large circles from the plastic, scrunch the paper and place it in the middle, then fold up the edges and secure with a rubber band, so you have like a padded sort of lump with a tail.) Then you make a long plait out of wool - we always used the traditional colours of red, white and black - and tie it on and voila, a poi.

yes i have such good memories of P.E. class, when we'd all line up and use our poi (especially when the poorly made ones would suddenly come apart and the head would go flying across the room).

    good times. Go New Zealand.

and good luck with your poi.
