Venezuela Thanks Cuba for Literacy Program Support

Havana, July 4 (AIN) Venezuela will gradually be a nation free of illiteracy, said President Hugo Chavez, as he thanked the people of Cuba for their contribution to educational efforts in his country.

During his regular Sunday broadcast of Aló, Presidente (Hello Mr.President), Chavez announced the first illiteracy-free communities in Venezuela, reported the Granma newspaper.

Chavez said each of those communities will be presented with a symbolic flag with the inscription an "Illiteracy Free Territory" in a campaign expected to conclude October 28.

In a meeting with people involved in the initiative, the leader emphasized that the effort gave dozens of women in the Caracas' "23 de Enero" parish the opportunity to learn how to read and write, as he acknowledged the work of Cuban educational experts who contributed to the success of the program.

Identifying the program's Cuban director, Celia Esther Rodriguez, President Chavez asked the audience to give her applause in recognition of the support given by the Cuban people.

"Fortunately, the lack of education suffered by so many of the Venezuelan people is something that is being remedied," Chavez said, "and very soon it will be only a part of the country's regrettable past."

It's what we need worldwide. Instead of countries fightig each other, countries helping each other, under the venezualan model. This is the most important thing.

And even more incredible, illiteracy was practically eradicated in just two or three years. From having an illiteracy over twenty-three percent, to close to zero, is amazing, especially for a small nation with very little resources. But it was not because of luck. Rather, it was on the initiative of the revolutionary government, and the will of the people. The system allowed it to happen.
