What are the gods in Wicca? What is their purpose? How do they function? What can be known about them?

    http://enchantedtempleofisis.com/deities.htm

Here is a place to start. There is alot of great information out there about the gods and goddesses. Much can be learned about them. Cernnunos, The Horned One, is a popular God in Wiccan practice and rules the forest, animals and fertility.

www.witchvox.xom is another great site to learn about Wiccan basics.
    Have fun with your journey.

    Forestnymphe,

the second link did not come up for me. I am not really interested in the different deities so much as their general nature, how they are regarded. What are they? What is their relation to man? To the world? To each other? What is their nature understood to be by a Wiccan? Those types of things.

    Thanks.

    If I'm correct...

There is basically one energy that balances.. because that's hard for us humans to imagine, we make it into something we can relate to: male and female.. ergo God and Goddess.. there are many representations of them.. focussing on different aspects (of the genders). For example like ForestNymphe said, the Horned One rules the forest, animals and fertility. It's quite common I believe to work dieties from for example Celtic, Greek or Egyptian myths.. depending on you personal preferences and the character of the ritual you're doing.

I hope this answers your question a little. If not, maybe you can ask more specific questions. On the other hand, you can't really expect us to explain the whole general nature of dieties, how they are regarded and what they are etc etc in great detail. ForestNymph gave you some websites that can help you discover the path and otherwise there is always google ;) No seriously.. you are most welcome to ask whatever question.. just remember that there is a difference between having it handed to you on a gold plate without any effort of yourself and asking for guidance when you're stuck!

    Blessed be :)

Velvet, I did check out the site that worked for me, and it is about specific gods. In addition to learning more about the other religions represented on this board, I'm also trying to promote more peaceful and enthusiastic interfaith dialogue. As much as I'm interested in the answers -- and I am -- I'm also interested in the interaction that leads to those answers and the interaction that comes from those answers.

To rephrase my question: what are the gods to you? I hope that makes a little more sense.

Dauer, that does help. I can't speak for all pagans about relationship with deity. I can only speak from my experiences and heart.
The gods and goddesses are in everything, divinity manifest in nature, people, their passions and spirits. Personally, it is a life affirming relationship that makes me grateful for life and lessons learned on the journey. Deity is ancestors, honoring that force within that resounds in the belly and blood. I studied a few paths and have come to know gods and goddesses of many different pagan paths. It all kinda boils down to this, together the two are one, and within that one is love, and that love is completely natural and pure. It is creation. We all hold it. It's that light that shines in a child's eyes. I believe we all hold the essence of the god and goddess, by whatever name you choose to call them. The natures of deity are as multi faceted as we are. We are reflections of deity. Gaia, Diana, Hecate, Bacchus, Pan, Kwan Yin,... I call upon them all, and yet believe all gods are one god, all goddesses are one goddess. Each has a sacred and personal gift to give.
Hope this made some kind of sense to you. Spirituality is something I consider personal and sacred. Kinda hard to describe here in an internet forum. I am all for interfaith dialogue of the peaceful kind. That in itself is an act of love.
Here's a good link, sorry for the typo.

Yup.. that does help, since it's very hard to talk about these things 'in general' since paganism is such a wide belief. Therefor my previous posts reflects my own beliefsystem for a great deal.. but to add a little more: I don't really worship or pray to a specific diety, since I'm not too familiar with them (yet) plus I tend to focus more on the universal energy that's all above, around and in us (kinda similar to what ForestNymphe just said).. if I do a spell I just 'send my wish into the universe' and I have faith that it'll be ok, 'cause you can't really change what's meant to be anyway.. you can nudge it at most ;)

Very true. The intent of a full heart is something awesome to behold. =)

Wicca is a reconstructionist religion - feel free to use whatever deities you wish.

Basicly i understand there is a female and a male side of "god" the goddess and the god or the lord and lady. they are everything they are also sometimes refared to as "the all" but neither the god or the goddess is better then the other they are equil and together they sorta made everything natural. the God is seen in the sun and the Goddess in the moon. There are festivals throughout the year and they are connected with what state the moon and sun are in. for example after midsummer God is seen as dieing as the days are getting shorter, but once the days become longer again is is seen as being re-born.
    i hope that helped
