Hi all, i am 20 years old and i live in central ohio. I have a lifepartner which i love very much.(shes my best friend) after visiting this fourom and doing some research of my own i started to develop a dream. im sure that its not totally diffrent than other ppls dreams, but it is mine and i think i can find other like minded ppl who share it. I draw alot of my insperation from the Feel Free Farm Project, just because they really seem like they have the right idea. I don't whant to start anything big (it will be big in heart not big in size). I whant to get about 5-10 ppl together, start talking and planing and making sure everybody clicks before we get to envolved. my idea is to get about 10-20 acres of land anywhere between ohio and georgia. get a couple of trailors to live in temperaliy untill we get set up. i whant to garden and farm for food, and be a refuge for any travelers or wanderers. this is just a broad image of what i want, i am very flexible and open to many ideas. and relize that it may take a year or two to get set up, and mostly i whant to start finding ppl with slight skill(some basic farming and carpentry would be nice but not nesccesary)that can get together and start turning a dream into reality. any one interested in the orginization procces, any one that has ideas, or any one ready to start the ball rolling please e-mail me at jypsymoth3@excite.com or just pm me. thanx to all. ~jypsy moth
Sounds like a good plan/idea... the Feel Free Farm project would be a good source of inspiration for your dream...You should talk to hippyhillbilly, I am sure he would love to give advice/tips. I am interested in being on board too, I live about an hour away from you
thats great, first i think we need to diecide some guide lines for the foundation of a community, look back to the past and see what has worked and what hasn't worked. I think lack of personal space and privacy is an issue to be dealt with that i see poping up alot. we need to determin how we will survive our first year and things like that. I don't whant it to be big, maybe 8 owners/investers/friends and every one else should be comers and goers. just some ideas. ~jypsy moth
Sometime this sumer or fall i will be taking a trip to tenn. and learning about tree farming for profit. i got some friends down there who can support their selfs for about 6months on 1 acre of trees.my biggest concern is what we will do for food and money. though personaly i don't give a damn about no green back dollar, i know we will need it for at least the first year(for grociers and what not, until the harvest comes in) another thing i need help with is how to obtain some land and how much, i figure once we get a good group of ppl together then it will be easier to get started. sandobandito- if you are seriously interested email me, two brains are better than one. alsoi have a couple friends here in lancaster that may be interested, and they offer an obundent knowlege in carpentry skills. May i also ad that i was a 1st class boyscout back in the day, and i offer a degree of knowlege in the outdoors.
hilly and dilly if you are reading this i would also like to come down and visit you when i go to tenn. i have to wait and get some wheels first. ~jypsy moth
would love to spend some time with you jypsy,,,, share with you our own experiences ,, good n bad lol, and let you see a bit more of what we are about and what you yourself are about... so yes when ya make it to tenn give us a holler .. we'll be around.... when ya start on your journey holler as well,,, i have some updates to the site i need to get to soon but dunno when , however we do now have a toll free number for folks on the road to make it easier on them to get in touch with us(one of the updates i need to make). After reading so many younger folks ideas on these forums and others it is genuinely nice to see someone going about things in a responsible n thought out manner.. Sometimes young folks really worry me with there dreams and hopes especially when they are often times very skewed from what reality really is... luv n lite dilli n hilly
Farming trees for profit sounds like a good trade to master. I feel ya on the "no love for the greenback dollar" thing, but agree whole heartedly with the necessity factor....As for aquiring land, thats just one of the many tricky things that a venture like this would have to overcome...Were you wanting to learn the tree trade for a possible business venture??? I am a factory guy right now, so you can probably guess that my financial situation is less than ideal, but I am ALWAYS in the market to make changes....I REALLY hate factories!!! I am not much of a green-thumb, but I do know a few things, and would love to learn more. Were you wanting to try and establish a full blown farm, with livestock and all, or were you thinking more along the lines of a farm- type business?? As for funding to keep the place afloat, maybe those who would be deeply involved with the project could develop some sort of a business to generate just enough income to keep things rolling, and also get jobs outside of the project at first to ensure stability. Just an idea, but I have read alot on this subject and finances tend to be among the number one killers of dreams like this one.
to start i have had my share of factory jobs, and i feel your pain. it seems you have done your homework. I think trying to establish sorta small buisness type community would be a great idea, i also agree that having "second" jobs out side of the community would be essential at first. thats why i feel a good group of good ppl would help out alot, with about 6-10 ppl living permenitly with part-time jobs plus drifters helping to work the land or give donations, this idea is very real and very possible. if we could get 10 ppl (including our selfs) to save up maybe 500 dollars over maybe a year or two (sooner the better, but you can't rush these things) we could get about 5,000 dollars to put a down payment on some land or something ( i don't know much about real estate so we would have to research it). so if we can get the man/woman power, we can begin to start the wheels-a-spinnin. So if you like what your reading and you whant to get involved, or maybe just have ideas let us know. ~jypsy moth~
That all sounds like a good plan, but once money is raised and its time to acquire the land, who's name it to go onthe deed?? Would we use the name of a person or of the formed group?
