KC I was one of those eat tons of low to no carb foods, and I lost weight. In fact I'm going to start the diet again. I exercize all the time and it never really helped me until I started the low carb diet. Hell I was a dancer and had to turn in a food journal to my teacher. I didn't eat junk food, and I was still FAT. The low carb diet doesn't work for everybody, but you don't see me putting vegetarians, or vegans down. It's a persons choice. I do, however, think it's stupid that people are buying food at fastfood places just because it says low carb. It's still junk food people!

jeez, you didn't read all my posts, obviously. i'm all for the whole grain foods with more fiber. i make a point of kicking out the sugars and useless breads and too much pasta. seems to be that is a healthy way to eat. people are eating too many carbs, and cutting them back isn't hurting anyone. cutting them out entirely is unhealthy. tis why i eat lots of vegetables.

The thing I guess most people don't get about the low carb diet is it really isn't bad. People say you need carbs......true, but it's like calories, you need those, too, but you probably don't need nearly as much as you're getting. You need carbs, but most people probably eat alot more than they should. My dad weighed about 350 lbs, he had high blood pressure, high colesterol, and believe it or not he really didn't eat much at all. It's just that the stuff he was eating wasn't healthy. Since he started that diet he's lost almost 100 lbs, (20 in a month) his blood pressure has gone WAY down, and he's feeling alot better overall. I tried to go on that diet and I lost like 5 pounds in 3 days, but i ended up quitting because it's just too meaty for me. I also HATE tuna, and ground beef, so you can imagine things didn't last long. But still, people complain about that diet so much more than they really should. Maybe my father doesn't get enough excersize and all, but if he's healthier and feeling good, then I see nothing wrong with it.

I'm not sure if this has already been said or not, and I'm too lazy to look, but low-carb/no-carb diets are probably the most unhealthy diets ever invented. I just thought I should share that in case anyone didn't know.

there's no such thing as a no carb diet. frankly, i think that the low carb craze has done a good job of forcing people to look at the processed carbs they're putting into their body and forcing them to choose the things that are better. if you want bread or pasta, you have to eat a high fiber version of it. if you want sweets, you have to eat certain fruits instead of candy. people are reducing how much soda they're drinking, avoiding nutritionally empty foods, and are being presented with more options in terms of carbs to eat. most americans don't get enough fiber in their diets anyway, and the atkins diet has forced people to start looking for higher fiber foods.

sure, some people go fucking stupid with the junk food fats that do your body no good, but these aren't the meats necessarily condoned by the atkins diet. in the end of the program, you find out just how many carbs you PERSONALLY are able to consume without suffering ill effects. people are being forced to pay attention to what they're putting in their mouths and what it does to them. i think the low fat craze was one of the dumbest fucking things i've ever seen. fat was pulled out, and sugar was poured in. eat anything you want as long as it's non-fat! bullshit. low carb doesn't mean no carb.

i consider the low carb craze to be the reaction to the non-fat craze. eventually people will realize that completely cutting all carbs from their diet is just a stupid as cutting fat from their diets, and people will return to normal. only now there will be more healthy options.

I sort of accidently went on the low carb diet about ten years ago. I was working at a fast food place and the only food I could sneak easily was chicken nuggets. That diet plus the high amount of exercise that goes with being a drive-thru order packer and not to mention the mopping and sweeping made me drop wieght like crazy. About 15 pounds in two weeks. I couldn't keep it up tho'. Started getting lightheaded a lot. Now I have to have carbs. Don't eat much meat anymore it doesn't sit well in my tummy. When I say carbs I mean the complex ones- not donuts or white bread.

Yes, that is what I think..

    Anyway about the whole low-carb thing . . .
if people really want to lose weight they should cut back (not cut-out) the SIMPLE carbs, and continues eating the complex ones. The simple ones are the ones they need to worry about if they are eating an excess of 'em. But a lot of idiots don't realize that without complex carbs there is a high risk of heart disease, constipation and many others . . .

What I am trying to say, is moderation is key for the simples
(unless your diabetic). Continue to eat the complex.

    Blah.

Quite a few people have taken to this diet for the wrong reasons, because it shows immediate results. Atkins or forms of the low-carb diets can be a good thing for certain people. Some folks are overweight, and have tried eating sensibly (4 food groups etc) and working out, but see no results. Atkins changes that, helps them find a goal weight that they can maintain. ANYTHING that stops 'fat-america' has to be a good thing. Now I do agree that it IS bad for those who take on the no-carb lifestyle and ignore what their body needs. People need to be seeing a doctor or at least consulting with a knowledgable person when they are on these types of diets. It takes extreme measures for, lets say a person who is 100+ pounds over weight to shed those pounds. With low-carb diets they can do it, feel better, and be able to work out/eat sensibly when they reach that goal weight.

I really thought this low carb diet thing was crap too, until I saw it help some people that I love dearly. My sister was never able to lose weight, she's a medical professional, works out daily, and eats very well, never lost more than 5 pounds. She started Atkins and hit her goal weight in a few months, and is now maintaining it with healthy eating and working out.

i would have to say the one thing i am sick of is the economic exploitation of everyone who wants to live sustainably by jacking the price way up on anything and everything that might help do so. including things like mushrooms, avacadoes, and don't get me started on cornflakes.

in some cases there is some tradeoff in production cost or competitive advantage, but in most there is not and in some it is even the opposite!
