Ok...recently I started a thread about starting some nat. dreads. Well in the last 24 hours I have mentioned it to some people I know. One being my Brother in law and another is my husbands best friend. They said it is gross and ugly and said "oh, now your going to be a total hippy" What the fuck is that supposed to mean? I know it isn't important what other people think and it won't stop me from doing it. I'm curious...what comments or looks do you get from people just because you have dreads? Do you find that it makes it difficult to be respected or appreciated in any way? Just curious as to how you all handle the judgemental bastards of the world PEACE
judge mental bastards are just that bastards my moto is "f*** the ignorant" dont lissen to them. i always get stairs when i walk through the mall haha its fun i either stare back or bark it scares people. i dont bark unless i stare back and they dont look away or if it preps. lol i remember 1 day me and my best freind ( just to let u kno shes a metal head and allways wears black. and i always have a black skateboard shirt on that day i was wearing black jeans 2) back to the story, ya so we were walking trought the mall and the person at the door of american eagle was staring at us so we walked in. you should have seen her face it was funny. i picked up this gross pink shirt and asked the same person if they had it in xxxl she had to go out back then we left while she was back there. it was mean but the funniest thing ever. i remember the first time my grand mother seen them(shes a prude) she was like :O that looks lame. lol that was really funny
to knottyinthemaritimes you bark at people? haha i mean no offence but if someone barks at me it doesnt scare me it makes me laugh haha cool cool love that u like to show ur dreads though yea people keep asking me, so you cant wash ur hair? hey hippy, Oh now ur hippy, are u trying to be a hippy? poser, i get a lot of crap haha but im just like i am who i am . or they say like i hate ur hair so i say good then dont look at it or ok then dont get dreads haha i dont care i like em!! and my mom always says it makes u look scroungy and dirty i was like, but im not so who cares haha
lol ya i do. But to like ignorant adults who when i walk by grab their kids and hold them. i unno. its just funny to see peoples reaction. im a skate boarder im 14 and adults think im a theif, ect. so i just like to screw with peoples heads.
i don't ealy care what people think, i ahve had security guards follow me around shops, so I pick things up & put them down in random shelves or follow them around, pretty funnny, otherwise i just ignore the small minded people. I also have a few piercings & i get moer stares with them but i just play with them when they start looking or keep looking at them & don;t look away, they don't know where to look
I feel that I am well respected. I had no trouble getting an internship position in an american overseas school, as well as here at home in germany (but they don't look so much how you look, rather then on your permanent record, and mine is clean I have had security guards follow me. Strange enough, there is only that one shop here that has guards at all... well, I am glad they got rid of that guy. He was spooky. My brother tends to really annoy me about my hair. but he's a freakin right wing military asshole now, so... I don't bother. I get the strangest questions though from random people, but they are surprisingly friendly, and usually like my dreads :-D
I don't have dreads, and neither does my husband, but he used to have gorgeous long hair a little past his shoulder blades when he played in his band. He had to cut it once he was heading into a more professional place of employment. No one actually told him he had to cut it, but he did it anyway. He often talks of growing it back. Anyway, he had a lot of comments when he wore his hair long from narrow-minded people telling him he needed a hair cut. A lot of negativity, despite his beautiful, and I mean beautiful "he should be doing shampoo commercials" hair. It really doesn't matter much, because even now his co-workers tease him about being a hippy because of his way of thinking, and they've never even seen him with long hair. I think dreads are totally awesome. I myself don't wear them because I find comfort in brushing out my long hair, or having someone do it for me. Mmm, fels so nice. Or when my babies grab a handful of my hair and nuzzle their little heads into it, as if it's a blanket. I don't think I could give that up. But whenever I see someone with good looking dreads, I'm always fascinated. I think they look great, and I always give them a big smile. There is this young woman that works at a store nearby, and I'm surprised she's allowed to look the way she does at work, but they let her. Anyway, she's got piercings on her face, tattoos up her arms, and dreads. I always chit chat with her, and she seems relieved that I'm not like some of the other customers she probably gets. I certainly don't clutch at my children and avoid her like some of the other shoppers I've seen.
I get mostly stares....at first it bothered me, but I've gotten pretty used to it by now after almost a year. My family doesn't seem to mind too much, not even my grandma, although she does like to say how pretty my hair was before I did this (even thought it wasn't pretty LOL). They mostly just roll their eyes about pretty much everything I do, because I am very different from all of them. Sometimes I'll hear people whispering about me in public places. I've heard lots of "oh, look at her hair, that's gross". I really like it when people come up to me and ask about them, because then I can explain to them that my hair is actually very clean and well maintained. But mostly, I say, don't act like a jerk towards people who stare or act rude, because then they will have a reason to think that people with dreads are rude and are troublemakers. Like some of the other posters, I get followed a lot in stores too. After having them for so long, I barely notice when others say things or do things anymore.
yeah personally i dont notice it alot. if people make comments, if they are out of curiosity im always more then willing to talk to em about the truths of dreads. But if its someone who is making rude remarks, i usually just send them a big smile, when thats happened people find it hard to be rude again, after seeing you being geuinley nice. But in the end i dont get to caught up in comments because ive gotta live with em, and i love them.
