Can you believe the comments Tom Cruise made about Brooke Sheilds and her PPD, and her use of medication to treat it? What the heck does he know about it? I say if a woman is suicidal and visualizing her infant hitting a wall, she needs medication and counseling. I think it was very irresponsible for him to go on national television and criticize women who use medication to help them out in such a difficult time in their lives. Shame on Tom...... and Kudos to Brooke for getting help.
i guess he is doing what he believes in. I know he was a complete prick but atleast he has an individual opinion....
mmm....his opinion on postpartum depression is about as informed as mine is on scientology....I am not one but I have an opinion on it! :X
It ruins your life, sucks the fun out of everything. All you want to do is lay in your room alone, and then you start wanting to die. Depression can't just be dealt with, you can't just go do your favorite activity and forget about it. You probably wont even want to do your favorite activity. People need drugs to get back their lives. Tom Cruise doesn't understand mental pain. He is a douchebag. Hes not a doctor either, hes a dfdsf actor. Don't listen to Hollywood, Hollywood are douchebags.
For real. But that's not really the point. Everyone has opinions and beliefs, but you can't tell people who don't believe the same as you that they are wrong and you are right. It's none of his business-it doesn't affect him in any way if Brook Shields took antidepressants and he has no right telling her and other women in similar situations that their treatment is wrong.
Hey! Leave that man alone please! He's just giving a woman's point of view. (I'm broke so you can't sue, can you??? (Uh oh)
As a woman who suffered from PPD with my oldest son and as a woman who sought help early on to prevent it from happening again after the birth of my twins, a man has no way of knowing what it feels like. Unless you have given birth and experienced the fluctuation of hormones, the dramatic changes your body goes through, well then, you have no idea and have no ground to stand upon.
I agree, that everyone has a right to an opinion, but Tom Cruise has went beyond having an opinion about something. He's rude and obnoxious. And his saying anything about PPD is ridiculous.
He's just losing his mind. He probably didn't mean anything he said. He just looks really gay to both the media and the public at a time where he can't afford to and he can't make it better. He is going through a depression because he feels like he has to marry somone to prove he isn't gay and he really doesn't want to do this. I know that he had no right to say what he said but he just isn't right at the moment so try to just ignore him until he straightens himself out and feels right.
Although I really like Tom Cruise (a la "Rainman" and "Risky Business"), I do really think this proves my notion that religion makes you absolutely crazy...
This seem like a strange way of overcompensating or covering. I like his work as an actor & he is very cute but I doubt if I could ever get along with him for very long. I never do very well with religious zealots regardless of the religion it is. I had a friend that is now a scientologist & that is one of the reasons that he is an ex friend. He became fond of spouting off rediculous crap about stuff he didn't know anything about too. Is that part of their indoctrination? Now if Tom Cruise would just get over all this silliness & realize that he could live happily as a gay or bi he would be much more comfortable & he could mind his own business. Hey, anyone know of a good GLBT "boot camp" where someone can go & get themselves out of their closet? :X
He's been so nasty about it, that's what bugs me. You know he's going to claim first amendment for any critisizm for it, too. Yes, Tom, you do have the right to speak your mind, and even to be an ass about it. But don't get mad when people use their first amendment right to call you an asshole.
Due to the fact that Psychology is my major, I feel the need to comment on this debate. I will start off by stating that I do not know Broke Shields personally, nor do I possess all of the information in relation to her illness specifically. Postpartum Depression is not a disease that I have studied in depth thus far into my major. However, Tom Cruise did make some very valid points in regards to Psychiatric medication. The method of treatment is often abused by both patients and the doctors who prescribe them. The only job a Psychiatrist possess is to write the prescription. Behavioral Therapy (Psychotherapy) that is needed for the long term course of the healing process is the job of a Psychologist. However, MANY people only see the medical doctor, thus, forgoing the heft of the treatment which is learning effective coping skills, changing behavior patterns, and goal setting. Hollywood is infamous for having doctors (both in Psychiatry and other avenues of the medical field) who prescribe medication which is either un-necessary or abuse-promoting (ranging from psychiatric drugs, such as Valium, appetite suppressants, and various sleep aids). Medication suppresses (by causing a dramatic change in serotonin levels. and as far as chemical imbalances, there are MANY factors that can contribute, those which have absolutely NO relation whatsoever to a mental illness, rather, physical health). Psychiatric medication does not heal. That is what Tom Cruise was implying.
He was talking yo Matt Lauer on the Tody show and said to him "You don't know th history of psychiatry, i do" "You don't know what you are talking about" He is the most arrogant man i have heard speak in a long time. His views on certain things, are clearly from a point of view where he HASN"T experience what he talking about. In this circumstance, he should be careful to sound so all knowing when he is clearly clueless. I agree with Nicole Kidman. Katie Holmes should run and run now. She said thet he married Nicole young and he is repeating the same pattern with Katie. I guess the younger they are, the less experienced of the world, the more influence he may have over them. To convince or persuade her to cross to Scientology and live HIS way of life.
His arrogance in front of Lauer amazed me too...he was talking like he had a PhD in psychology or something. I don't really keep up with Cruise, I have never been much of a fan, so I don't know if he has always considered himself so smart - but with all his implied intelligence he sure does make himself look like a fool...
