I have a question for all you Mommies. My friend just found out that she is pregnant but a week before she found out, she took some acid. She's freaking out because she doesn't want to abort but is afraid she may have done some serious damage. I'm not a Mom and have never been pregnant so I don't know what to tell her...I want to give her some hope that it might not be that bad but I honestly don't know what to tell her. Any help?

Well...I really doubt that this is the first time this has ever happened. I would tell your friend to relax. Worrying isn't going to make the baby safer. Also, I hope this goes without saying, but she is done tripping, right? When you find out you're pregnant, your priorities need to CHANGE. You're a mom before you ever start showing.

I know a guy whose mom took peyote when she was pregnant with him. He seemed normal as a kid, but now he's a little off. Maybe it has to do with that, maybe it doesn't. Who knows?

Acid is different, though. You never know what the heck you're getting. I hope she's taking better care of herself.

As far as my reading goes there's a sort of "everything or nothing rule" for the first two to four weeks. If the zygote it damages by then already, it is aborted by the body itself, and if it's fine, it stays.

But there are severel people in here that know a lot more.

Yeah, she knows...she's actually pretty responsible. She usually doesn't party, this was actually her first time tripping so I think that's also why she's worrying but I told her the same thing... that the stress wouldn't help anything.

As far as I know there are no known side effects to LSD. However, that does not mean it is safe to take while you're pregnant. When you're tripping, who knows what you might do or who you might do it with. This kind of activity puts your baby at risk for all sorts of problems. But taking acid once shouldn't hurt the baby. She just shouldn't do it again. I'll check at work tomorrow to see if anyone knows anything else. But she should be okay.

i found out i was preg a week after taking mushrooms, no where near as strong i know, but still hallucenogenic, and turned out they were far stronger than normal, and my bub is doing great, bub should be fine, but i cant promise, ok, i dont usually advocate this cos its kinda wasting hospital time but maybe she should try and get an early scan, say shes not sure of dates, in UK they can do a dating scan, that would tell her if there are any major physical probs (which is unlikely) but it wont tell her if there is any tiny problem. any major damage to any part of the baby would as you say usually cause an abortion. its highly unlikely that her trip did any damage at all, and its a fact that being stressed can lead to miscarrige, so the best thing your friend can do is take real good care of herself from now on and relax, babies dont like stressed mamas however developed they are, the hormones affect them.

best wishes to the new mama.

My neighbor and I were talking about this the other night, ironically. She said that she had done the same thing when she found out she was pregnant with her daughter.

Her daughter is now 2 and bright as can be. No signs of any effects yet. HTH

Ya, I think there are many of us who did things we wouldn't do knowing we were pregnant. And I think she will be alright. My only concern for her would be to make sure she knows to nurture her body from here on out and be healthy from this point on. I would tell her not to worry ..early in pregnancy there is a natural occurance in the body. If the fertilized egg is damaged the body will usually miscarry it.

Sending positve pregnancy vibes to your friend!~~~

Thank you all for your replies. She and I had a long talk, I gave her a nice little massage to help her relax and told her some of the things that you all told me. She said she's gonna try not to stress about it anymore and just take good care of herself.

stressing about this is probably going to do more damage than the LSD. The momma's here are right...if the egg is damaged the body will probably reject it. Tell her to get plenty of rest and try meditation when she stresses on the subject.

The most serious effect of lsd is that it can trigger uterine contractions. So if she hasn't had a problem by now she's not going to. If what she took was pure acid. Like others have said, a lot of what is out there today is not pure or may not be acid at all. Acid, mushrooms, marijuana should not be a problem. But since you don't know what else is in there you shouldn't use them during pregnancy. (The exception would be using marijuana for morning sickness and stuff like that.) However, do not tell your doctor that you have used. Even if you only used one time. It could get you in big trouble, even get your baby taken from you. If you're using marijuana for morning sickness, remember it can show up in a urine test for 30 to 45 days depending on the amount of body fat you have. Many hospitals will drug test your urine and your baby's without ever telling you. It's scary these days to see how many clients I have who only smoked a joint once in a while for nausea and then lost their baby because of it. You have to be careful what you tell the medical profession. They do not always have your best interest at heart.

That is so mean! Here we have laws forbidding a medical professional to tell anyone what you said. they have a duty to remein silent about everything. So if your doc here, would tell anything like that, he'd be in trouble as well. This is to protect people that they have someone to trust their health issues on, and to provide the best care (i.e better monitoring, better information) for the patient.
That includes also urine and blood tests that you didn't know of. There are some holes to peep through, but that is only if you are endagered of hurting your self or others. And smoking pot during pregnancy is probably not considered to apply to that....

My best friend took coke before she was pregnant, and told her doc. And nothing happend. He just said something like "you know yourself that it is bad, and that if she's responsible, she shouldn't do it again". She didn't. She's such a cute mom, of such a cute lil almost 3 year old, who's such a bright kid :-D
