Joss Stone reincarnation of Janis Joplin

I think Joss Stone is a true flower child. And the resemblance with Janis is just so striking. I think Joss Stone has the soul of Janis. She is the reincarnation of Janis Joplin. No question about it.

Er, no. Joss Stone is sweet, and a very, very good soul singer, no doubt. But that's it. Have you really LISTENED to Janis Joplin, dude, and not Joss Stone singing a Janis Joplin song?? Janis was a blues/R'nB'/Rock singer of a calibre I cannot see being equalled.


Also, as Janis said herself, you've got to LIVE the blues to REALLY sing or play it, and Janis's life was pretty much Full Tilt Boogie; you can HEAR all that juice, the hard times, the chickenshit asshole boyfriends she liked so much, and the drugs, man, whereas Joss is a little sweetie who, almost certainly, has never known hard times or been anywhere NEAR the edge! And it counts, it's that little bit extra 'mojo'......it is the difference. It's not for everybody, it's not for the faint-hearted, and certainly not for little Joss, either.

Then again, Joss Stone is still very young, but I hear chicks as good at just about every open mic night I go to. I have still to hear anything like Janis Joplin, but here's hopin'.......

Joss has that hippy look, albeit a bit 'put on' and probably urged to do so by marketing, management et al, whereas Janis found that look for herself and borrowed bits of the chicks around the haight-ashbury scene, but Joss Stone doesn't look physically anything like Janis Joplin, dude. Janis was not a real looker, and she was well aware of it, but, boy, was she sexy! Joss is a looker, and, well, kinda sweet and homely, and living with some scion of Motown who wouldn't know a Harley Davidson if one ran over him.

 

Joss Stone is more of this time. If Janis lived in this time she would be like Joss Stone.

i agree with you on all counts. i might be the only on this thread who got to see janis in concert 6-8 times, and there was NOTHING to compare her to. she was a true original. so many singers these days seem to be more about the "style" and the "look" and not the substance. joss stone has the look but i was embarrassed for her to even be on the same stage with melissa etheridge singing "piece of my heart". wish had 1/4 of the soul that melissa put into that song and then she'd only have 1/100th of the soul that janis had. she should be so lucky. on the other hand i don't see you guys having the choices we had back then today. unfortunately if janis (not known for her looks) came along today she'd probably wouldn't get the chance to be heard cause she wasn't pretty enough for the record companies to market. but as silver salamander said she had a raw sexiness that far surpasses the fake bull-shit sex appeal that most female singers try to project today.

i have a 2 car garage filled with this stuff. my car has never seen the inside of the place....but most it is memorabilia not photos. the unfortunate part is that i very rarely carried a camera. most of the photos i have were taken by the people i went to the shows with not me. but i do have all the memories and anecdotes and as the really old song goes .."they can't take that away from me.."
