It found something when I was trying to download a program (one I used to use a while ago, on a different computer) and said it's listed as malicious software. How do I find out exactly what type of malicious software it is... keylogger, trojan, dialer etc. If it's something not too scary I want to get that game (dorky I know) because it's quite fun but I don't want to compromise the safety of my computer and the information I store on it.

In Spybot S&D, you run a "Check For Problems", and on the RIGHT side of the screen, is a details listing. You might have to expand it, by putting your cursor ON the divider line and dragging it to the left. That will give you more information.

My spybot never finds problems which unsettles me sometimes because I doubt my computer is that safe.

Hiro, Do you have the LATEST version of Spybot S&D? The one with "Tea Timer"?
Tea Timer, is a feature of the most recent Spybot. It won't let ANYTHING except windows, or YOU to change your registry. I'm thinking that could be why it never finds anything for you. When used with a good Anti-Virus, and it's partner "SpywareBlaster" you're pretty safe.

Actually Matt, I don't use the tea timer feature on SpyBot S&D because it prevented some other programs from working (don't remember which ones at this point, only that I had problems a while ago). I've found that just staying current with the bot definition updates and immunizing my system along with SpywareBlaster running happily in the background has kept me bot free (to my layman's knowledge at any rate).

    To answer your question imhurria...

If SpyBot S&D gives you a notice of infection then simply open the program, go first to the update section and make sure you have all the latest definitions (and download them if you don't). Then do a system scan with "search for problems" feature and once it has finished, click the "fix problems" button and your spyware will be eliminated. It will show a big green checkmark once your system is cleaned (or if no problems are found).

It CAN cause problems. I'll agree. Everytime bearshare p2p updates, it installs the "WhenU" spyware. But with Tea-Timer, it gives me a popup asking if "I" want to allow changes to my computer. Just check "NO" if you arent sure whats being changed. When S&D finds something, if you move the indicated slider, Info on it is on the RIGHT. That includes Threat Level, Creator info (IE: Google, Hotels.com)
Sometimes, even what info it sends back to the Creator. (Online buying habits, etc...)

spybot doesn't update it's program, just its definition files to my knowledge. you have to download the newest version, 1.4 i think

I tried today but it got all funny on me. I think the program I have tuneup system optimizer is removing problems daily on its own.

it's not the main screen of Spybot that pops up with it, it has a little screen jump up the moment I try to open the file. I'm thinking it's probably not gonna be a keeper then, unfortunately.

Let's see if i can make this screenshot work of the error message thinger (such good language and grammar there)

Sounds like its doing its job. Are you downloading files from untrustworthy sites on a regular basis?

From the looks of that screenshot, I wouldn't remove Spybot S&D unless you want to be infected with spyware.

not on a regular basis, no... I was just trying to download that one game. I used to play it a while ago and really enjoyed it (simplistic but addictive), but that was on another computer (not my own, and far less well protected).

Is there any way of finding out what the problem with that program is? because if it's just keeping track of what sites I go to, I don't care. If it's a keylogger, that would suck since I do the majority of my banking online. Is there a way of telling how malicious it is?

hi zapspot is listed as adware ---> could be used for bringing you unwanted ads these ads could also be used as a cover for loggers and dialers. what i also do is cross scan with ad aware se personal or spysweeper ---->update definitions and security software regularly in order to keep up with new sorts of stuff...:)

theres tons of decent spyware programs. people shove spwared laptops at me at work all the time.

the highest rated is webroot spysweeper, followed by spybot and adaware. Don't get
microsoft anti-spyware - they just made a deal when they bought Claria who owns Gator software
(if youve ever gotten spyware i bet you Gator was one of them) to downgrade the warning level
    for all the gator spyware.

    crazy shit.
