I live in a remote place and I've been trying to get a band going for many years now. I play regurally with guitarist who is good, we have played with just about every musician in our area, but none of them are as dedicated as we are. They either want to play in a band to impress people or just hang out and party.
Are we asking too much of other musicians?
Has anybody else been ther or are there now?
Any suggestions on what steps to take next are welcome.

i have the same problem with my band only me and my firend actuly want to go somewhere with the band and we want to have fun with it,we kick out many a drummer cause they where total assholes that just wanted to sit around doing drugs and look cool just casue there in a band, try and start something with your other band member,so far im just doing songs with my friend who is a bassest/singer, i play guitar so theres no drums which is holding us back alot everyone as soon as they hear our songs say they suck cause we dont have drums in them,so we going to a totaly new direction and doing drum samples that way we dont need a drummer and we are getting a new guitarist soon that my firend know which leaves me room to mess around with samples and synth if i want.

Yes, yes, yes. This is exactly the same problem I'm always having too. That or they're not open to trying anything new and they're just punkass kids playing power/barre chords and smacking shit around... or they're some drunk who only wants to do Skynyrd and David Allen Coe covers.

Thanks at least I know we're not alone out there. The drum samples will probably work well, and who said that a band had to have a real drummer, most rappers don't.

oh man... slipknot... the worst of the worst... i played bass in a lame band for a while, before i actually had musical talent, and ive been trying to get a jam band together for a long time, i play guitar as well, i envision something very similar to Dave Matthews Band, except not DMB... still on the look out for people to jam with who got the spark ya know... my old band needs a bassist so im gonna help them out until they get a new one...

I play bass and I have a guitarist/singer friend. It would be great to find a drummer. We also might have a keyboardist in the near future but he just started and I dont know If he is good yet.

Theres this one band that wants me to join. But they have like 10 guys and I dont know if theyre seroious. This other band that is very serious wanted me to join but theyre metal. Im still gonna go over and jam with them for fun though, whenever he calls me.

I get asked to join a lot of bands. It gets kind of annoying since every band has been the same raunchy, obnoxious, new metal shit. I keep my gear in the car and I let them play some of their stuff. If I don't like em then I tell them I'm gonna get my gear out of the car and then just take off.

I've noticed something, and no offense to drummers or singers, but drummer and singers seem to have more problems in life than say a bass player or a guitarist( at least from where I'm from). The ones I can always find either end up in jail (singers), or end up having three or four kids. Man what a messed up world.

Yeah, drummers piss me off sometimes. I don't mean percussionists like conga or djembe, but just drummers in rock bands and shit.

Um im not quite sure what to say to you. But try not to be so critcal of others, maybe if you guys start to head somewhere and are strong, then maybe then who you thought wouldn't work will work. Best of luck to you, and keep building on what you have and your own skills, try not to shut others out.

I always wanted to be a drummer... but I'm not physicaly capable of playing that instrument. My motoric skills are too low. So I ended up playing guitar. I love the sheer rythmic power in drums.

And on topic: I know 2 people who play an instrument: 1 guitar player who isn't really interested in music, and 1 flute player. I sometimes feel so lonely, because music is the big thing that runs my life now.

Err... wrong, in my opinion. If they're just along for the ride, they don't deserve to even be in the band... It's not a matter of shutting others out if I just want to jam, if the person isn't into it, what's the point of them even being involved if they aren't committed enough to it.

ive jammed with a few people here at this local music store, but they never want to do anything more. id love to be a lead singer for some good rock band, but until that, i dont mind just playing solo for whoever the hell wants to hear me. im sure if this went on for a while like it has with you it would annoy the hell outta me, but im not going to stay in one place for the rest of my life... what about just up and leaving? if youre as serious about it as you should be, that shouldnt be a problem at all. you and your friend just get in a truck or whatever with your instruments, and travel around playing for people... youll find people eventually.
