..and I don't know if I want that. I now have a nice steelstring, it's a really really good one and I'm sooo in love with it But lately I play classical music all the time during my lessons and that doesn't sound very well on my guitar, so now my teacher keeps on telling me that I should buy a Spanish guitar. Well, I have always hated Spanish guitars and I really don't know if want to buy one, though I know it would be easier to play classical music on. What do you think I should do? PS. I sound very chaotic, but that's because I'm so confused.
as long as your guitar is in optimal working condition, then it really does not make a difference what kind of music you play with it. the sound comes from the way you play it if youre taking lessons at a guitar shop or something like that, then your teacher is probably an asshole trying to get a sales commission. if not, then theyre just an idiot
I agree with Viking. What you feel about your manner of playing is more important than what other people might feel about it! If you feel uncomfortable with your guitar, it will be worst. I think you better let yourself the time to grasp the spirit of classical, and then try to express this spirit on your favorite instrument!
As a guitar player and teacher of over 30 years - Jeeeez!! It hurts to think of it!! - you are quite right for NOT wanting to abandon your steel strung guitar. Clearly, your teacher is teaching classical music, and he is correct in saying that this arguably sounds and plays better on a traditional nylon strung classical guitar. However, I suspect that maybe you are NOT that enthuiastic about classical music, and would rather learn modern acoustic songs and tunes that are mainly done on flat top, steel strung guitars. I love my steel strung Seagull the best, and I have many guitars. You CAN, though, play perfectly acceptable classical pieces on a steel strung guitar, and your teacher should be more than aware of this. In fact, they can often sound fresher on a steel strung guitar! Check this website out www.acousticguitar.com It has lessons and information galore. Have a break from your teacher, too! A teacher should ALWAYS ensure the pupil is learning music the pupil wants, and NOT what the teacher might play in his spare time!!
I'm a guitarist, I've played 6 years, I own 13 guitars and I know a little about what your teacher is saying. My friend learned classical guitar in college but had to drop the class due to he couldn't afford a nylon string guitar. I agree with everyone on here when they say the teacher is wrong. My opinion is if your paying the guy all this money to teach you he should be doing what you tell him not visversa. You could alway's find a cheaper nylon string guitar on ebay or musicians friend or someother site. But if it was me I'd bite the bulliet and get another guitar and keep your other one. But then again I'm not you and most people say I have more then I need anyway.
egh... I hate nylon string guitars... unless it's an older yamaha, a taylor, or a ramirez, they aren't really even worth it.
Thank for all the feedback guys. You are all saying what I think: I don't want another guitar, especially not a nylon string guitar. If I would buy another one it would be an electric. So I'm gonna stick with my beautiful Washburn, whether my teacher likes it or not. I would like to get another teacher but there aren't any around here. But next year I'm going to college so then I can get another teacher. Thank again
