Funky drummers: Mike Clark - Herbie Hancock Dave Garibaldi - Tower of Power Andy Newmark/Greg Errico - Sly and The Family Stone Zigaboo Modeliste - The Meters David Batiste - The Gladiators Russell Batiste - The Funky Meters Greg Webster/James "Diamond" Williams - The Ohio Players Jerome Brailey - P-Funk Maurice White/Sonny Emory/Fred White - Earth Wind and Fire Zoro and that ain't all Now, if you're listening to that lineup and your ass ain't shaking, check for a heartbeat, babe! Kilgore, I know you meant funk in general, but us drummers gotta represent!
man th rhcp are not funk...they are pop/rock/metal with maybe a little funkiness...that's a mere gateway. REAL funk is King Curtis, JAmes Brown, Tower of Power, Herbie Hancock, Gil Scott Heron, Brass Construction, MMW, even Aretha Franklin did funk...man funk is like reggae...underappreciated!
the bar-kays could bring the funk, as well as mister black moses himself, Isaac Hayes (Hyperbolicsylabissesquedalymistic is sick, as is the whole hot buttered soul album) also as far as the new funk revival, Cee-lo Green is pretty thick, i've seen him perform a few times, and he really blew me away. earlier, funky drummers were brought up. without mentioning Ahmir Thompson (AKA ?uestlove) who I would LOVE to see hook up with Claypool. two cents: deposited.
I am ashamed, but I plead CRS - Can't Remember Shit. Yes ?uestlove is thick. In my defense, I did say "and that ain't all".
i wasnt attacking, that ws just a gentile reminder. he is alway in my mind havign grown up in philly in the late eighties/early nineties when you could see the roots regularly. ahhh the good ol' roots/goats years. (any of you know the goats?)
...dr. funkenstein is a parliament song. well, funk that hasn't yet been mentioned...saw parliament a lot, but no funkadelic? marvin gaye, EWF, sly and the family stone, WAR, tower of power, kool and the gang, the isley brothers, curtis mayfield....that's all i have for now. there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of funk lovin' in going on in this forum. and it's downright shameful to even suggest a stones song on a thread like this!
Rock on for Gil Scott Heron!!! I only discovered that guy last year. Almost immediately went out and bought "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised".
Parliament and Funkadelic were both very funky. as far as modern funk goes, early Chili Peppers stuff is quite funky, as is Soulive. but, the funk crown is a tie between George Clinton and James Brown, you can't pick one, they were both great innovators in the grooviest of genres.
