I am thinking of purchasing some land where I can build a small cabin and grow some crops and live in peace. But I am trying to figure out the best state to move to. where can you purchase land cheaply and somewhere with somewhat moderate temps, and natural beauty... I know in alaska you can buy 10 acres with a cabin for less than 30,000 but the weather up there is so crazy, ;would anybody here recommend it. If anyone has any ideas or land for sale let me know thanks
But Indiana is soo boring and flat!!! (lived there for about 5 years, still have family there). Indiana would be a decent place for living like this, as would southern Illinois and Missouri.
Texas can get pretty hot (it has been in the 90's-100's since the end of April), but there is plenty of land! Much for pretty cheap. Add some longhorns or other livestock (goats, horses, sheep, etc...) to your property and get a good reduction in property taxes too. Don't often get those freezing temperatures and you can generally garden year-round.
Thanks for all the tips... I think I am going to buy in 3 or 4 states and have a few base camps for travel texas is hot but sounds like a good idead Thanks, some of you should come stay sometime... opening to the public... if you come, come with fresh thoughts and ideas.
If you are ever thinking about expanding your land to Canada, give me a shout. I have a ton of land coming my way... semi-wooded, in the southern edge of the Canadian shield. Lots of animals, wildlife, and about 10-20 minutes from a small town. Hot in the summer, cold in the winter.
If you were going to purchase land in multiple states Texas would be a great place for a winter residence. The temperature is generally between 60-75 degrees (daytime, and cooler at nivght) and it rains more often in the fall and winter then in the summer. This last christmas my father visited me he marvelled at the 84 degree weather we had at the time (he lives in Michigan). It starts to get hot here around April and starts to get cooler here around Spetember-October. The rainy season is in the cooler months. Be aware of the land you get and it's succeptability to flash flooding, Texas is at higher risk for flash-floods than anywhere else in the nation. The ground here is ver rocky and dry, and doesn't soak up the water - and when it rains here it POURS. It is like god turned on the spout full-force right over us, and the ground just isn't able to soak it up.
I have always wanted to buy some land in Canada. I love the beauty of the Canadian wild, and would love to have a large peice of land in the middle of nowhere to live. Both my husband and I have purposely set ourselves onb career paths that would allow us to live a more remote lifestyle. I am here in Texas, and it is much too hot from me. I grew up in Michigan and prefer the weather there. I guess I prefer the cold, I hate the hot weather. Enjoy and appreciate your land!
I am a homesteader in Alaska, and I must say, in my never humble opinion and having been to 48 of the 50 states, "It is the most free place in America to live". There is even land here that is TAX FREE. Zero taxes! As to the weather, well, it is what it is, no big deal. I would much rather work with a coat on than in 105 degree heat. Alaska: Land of two seasons, Winter and Buggs! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha HA
Southern Indiana is really nice, mostly rolling country, lots of tree's. Here is a link to a realty company in Greene county http://www.harrahrealty.com/. (I'm only including it for research purposes). Greene county is beautiful, land is cheap and they have no zoning which means you can pretty much do what you want, with your own land! The population in the county is 33,244 and there are only small towns, no big city's, so it's pretty low key.
