Hey everyone! I just wanted to inform those of you who might be interested in a program like this, to sign up and give it a shot! I was reciently chosen for their replacement list which means there is a 90% chance that I'll be participating.:)
I was wondering if anyone on these forums has ever taken part in the Katimavik program. If so, tell me a little about your experiences, what you did, just how you liked it....because Im very curious on what to expect.
If you are interested in this program, or are just wondering about what it's all about, check out the site at http://www.katimavik.org/....

    with love fellow Canadian's.

So I checked out the site, seems like a cool idea but a little sketchy at the same time. It sounds like it should be more of a reality show.

I don't like katimavik because you got a scheodule (is that the word? I'm frenchie lol) I'd rather have so much more liberty. Anyway! Could be fun too at the same time to meet new people around Canada.

    hey all

I'm a katimaviktim myself, did the program in 2002-2003 and I can say without a doubt that there is nothing 'sketchy' bout it...I swear. I can understand if some think it intrusive of your personal liberties but I honestly have to say it was the most liberating experience of my life.

nearly 3 years after my katimavik experience and life is taking me where I feel it should go, I have a new way of viewing my souls journey

and no, there is nothing religious or cultish about the program, my experiences during it just happened to impact on me significantly in a spiritual way

If you have any questions about the program give me a shout, always glad to give a hand

Hmmm. It's weird because I was at my friend's house and he said that his brother or his brother's friend or something was in that program. You probably know/are him. haha. I think it was the same year. I read this forum way back when, and then my friend talked about it one time and I hardly recognised the word (esp. since I'd never heard the pronunciation before) but then I remembered this thread.

I'd heard it was pretty much full of sex and awkwardness.... or maybe that's a different program for youth in Canada

It's a program for people aged 17-21, who regardless of program regulations are obviously going to do what people aged 17-21 have a tendency to do. It certainly wasn't a major issue in my group, there were a few couples, some gosip here and there but it wasn't a hormonial explosion by any means.

It's funny that most people I speak to who have nothing good to say about the program are those who either got kicked out (usually, well deserved) or quit and in place of simply saying why the program wasn't suited for them they try and save face by raving about what a crazy 'cult' the whole thing is or how they had a horrible project leader, kebetching about 'unjust rules' which they agreed to follow in the first place(!), crazy housemates, whatever. Nothing in life is ever perfect, these are the chalenges worth facing and shouldn't be viewed as the things to place external blame on, this serves only to blind someone from looking inside to see how THEY need to shape up to deal with life's curves...

...that wasn't directed at anyone in particular, just thaught I'd throw it out there because some people here seem to have less then favourable views of katimavik and I'm curious as to what there source or reason is

considering ALL your living and learning expenses are taken care of it ain't all that bad...

Plus it's not like you have lot's of time to kill your money with anyways right? On top of your volunteer work there are group workshops, healthy/outdoorsy/fitness activities, road trips, museums and galleries, community festivals and tons of other crap you get mixed into which usually does gaurentee some good crazy times and its also payed for you.

I had my parents supplement my weekly katima-allowence of $21 with another $20 from them so I always had enough for a few drinks, pool, coffe, a meal out, movie, whatever. In reality I could have done just fine with the $21, because that cash usually just went to buy shit that wasn't good for me anyways.
