I have a question that you all may be able to answer. I try not to buy personal care products that are animal tested. Because of this I stay away from alot of brand name items. I would shop for all natural stuff at the health food stores or on-line but my budget sadly doesn't allow for that possibility. Does anyone know if generic items are cruelty free, generally? I find myself buying them alot because they're cheap and they work just as well as the "real" stuff. It would seem to me that they would not do animal testing because they are basically copying the formulas of brand name items that have already had their ingredients tested by big corps like P & G, etc. Why would they spend the money? Anyone know?
Generic and name brands are made in the same place. Retail must add a price onto name brand items in order to make profit. where as a generic is one fixed price. All comes from the same place!!!! December
^^No, thats not true. That is true for drugs though. The FDA requires that generic drug manufacturers demonstrate that the drug has the same desired effect as the equivalent brand name product. They are, for the most part, the same drug. Contrary to popular belief, there are other manufacturers of dishwashing soap and floor cleaner than dawn and pine-sol. Many private labels and generics will buy national products to sell as their own, irrelevant of whether they test on animals or not. This is not the case with Food lion and Safeway House brand products.
Brand name drug companies often operate subsidiaries that market a generic version of their drug, in effect giving the drug company a monopoly. For example, Shering-Plough owns Warrick Pharmaceuticals, and UpJohn owns Greenstone. This is not, however, always the case. There are many large, successful generic drug companies, such as Mylan and Teva. Brand Name products are sold at a set price because there is little or no competition for them. Generic wholesale prices and pricing contracts vary greatly, which is why they are more profitable for retail and more economic for the consumer. I doubt generic products are animal tested, as it is very expensive. I would encourage you to call several large drug chains and ask, and post the results here. I would like to know. The corporate number for CVS/pharmacy is 1-800-SHOP-CVS. You should also call walgreeens and Rite Aid, their numbers can be found on their websites.
