It was a dark and stormy night...

I'm sure you've all heard the little story.

"It was a dark and stormy night. Three pirates sat around a campfire.
'Smee,' said the captain, 'tell us a story.' and Smee began. It was a
dark and stormy night...."etc.

Well what I want to know is why are there three pirates if we are only given information about two of them. Essentially, who is the other guy????
