well, i would like you everybody write here how are the relationship between the countries you are neighbours with.

For example, Spain has as neighbours Portugal and France. Well, I think that the Spanish are very stupid because we always speak (I don't usually do it) badly about the Portuguese, and we are not right at all, we only know their towels, and we usually forget that they have a strongly rich culture and roots like us. So, I think that's the reason which make the Portuguese not to stand the Spanish.
And with France, we're always complaining about the French's manners with the Spanish, and it was worst before, when they usually destroyed our fruit lorries that crossed the border. And in Spain we call the French "gabachos" hehehehe.
How do you call the Spanish LOL???

Hmm, I don't know about Spain, but Slovenia has 4 'neighbours':
    - Austria
    - Italy
    - Croatia
    - and Hungary

As for Italy, there's a common clique that they are all quite small (Slovenians are kinda tall mainly), darker skinned and always dressed in the most fashinoable clothes, and well that they always speak very aloud (which could be true, actually[IMG] but they don't always speak aloud).

As for Croatia, a common clique is that they are 'poor' and that they have two faces; a good one and a bad one...
I guess it's because some parts of Croatia are kinda poor (or they were when I was there a couple of years ago) and Croatia isn't as sophisticated as Slovenia is, but there's no reason why they couldn't sophisticate, seriouslly, I believe they can sophisticate lots.
Average Slovenian (like there's an average person in everything[IMG]) feels way richer than Croatians now when we've joined the E.U. . I guess that's just the way people are...

As for Hungary, there are no real common cliques as we only have few miles of border line with them and I live on the other side of country so I can't say much.
Their language is kinda funny as it's totally different than other European languages...

As for Austria, I couldn't say anything as they're really not mentioned often, it's just Italy (or is it because I live very close to Italy? I don't know.) and Croatia that are discussed usually.

The other thing are border lines; Slovenia is a quite new country (only about 15 years old) and it was in Yugoslavia before, so the border line with Italy, Austria and HUngary was no real problem as it was defined before (like in first world war and second world war, etc) but the border line with Croatia was not defined completelly as Croatia was in Yugoslavia as well, so there are still some problems with defining border lines with them, but I guess this will pass as well; that's where most cliques of Croatia come from, too, I guess.

In other words, I guess cliques are never useful and we should all just help each other, but that ain't going to happen any time soon, unfortunatelly...

I wonder if anybody read all that? :p

    Love,
    Borut

6 Neighbours:(from north to south! lol!)
    -Belgium
    -Luxembourg
    -Germany
    -Switzerland
    -Italy
    -Spain

And well, england isn't a neighbour, but we do consider it a bit as one!!!
    start off with the english:
French in general have a bad opinion of english! it's sadly true! lol! we never forget all these nasty wars between france and england! and the Joan of Arc thingy made a bad of what we call "the rosbeef". We are sooooooooooooo mean! lol it's terrible!
actually we just don't like Blair!

Spain: nothing to say really, lol! We don't reallly speak of spain, the south of france has a strong spanish culture and way of living, and we call them sometimes: Hispano! but that's nice.........right?

    Italy: nothing to say! lol!

    Switzerland: nothing to say either!

Germany:well, considering history between our 2 countries.....AHAHA we love germans! i dunno why but really the gouvernment is allways making
efforts so that France and Germany keep up being "twin countries!" !!

Luwembourg: we just think it's a to small country!

Belgium: all our jokes start of with " 3 belges sont dans un cafŽ..." ends up often by one of the "belge" guy saying something really really stupid. we don't have a good impression of belge culture....mbe coz of Jean Claude Van Damme....but we really like your fries!

whatver it's just a bunch of "clichŽ" so it's crap, don't follow it and ye all know we love ya! ;)

    Ok... Portugal's Neighbour is Spain.
Nowadays our official relations with Spain are ok, but through our History, Spain has always been a country with whom we had a lot of problems...
You probably don't know it, but Portugal started as a Shire, called Portucale, that belonged to the Kingdom of Leão ( which would become Spain when together with other kingdoms). Dom Afonso Henriques fought for our independence and won it. Since then, there were lots of conflicts between the two countries.
We don't like them and they don't like us. We think they are arrogants...For example, when they come to Portugal we try to understand them and don't force them to talk in English (portuguese and spanish are very simillar), but when we go to Spain they just don't make any efforts, we have to talk spanish or english. Another example, when Spain plays a football match against Portugal, they shout that they are gonna win, that they are gonna kick our ass, but then Portugal wins and they have to shut up, hahaha!
ok... I'm not going to be mean, some spanish guys are very nice :) (yes, it is for you)
Oh, by the way, we don't call the Spanish anything special but we are alway joking and saying "Oh si, cariño" ( because of the porn movies)!

    Kiss********

Yeah borut, I also read it, waw, really interesting things overhere.
One thing that surprise me is the fact of French people have nothing to say about the Spanish, cause we have had a lot of wars between the two countries, and we were ocuppied by the French for a lot of time, till the revolution.
Moony, did you know about the name we have for the French (gabachos)?
And don't you really have a name for the Spanish? I can't believe. We have to begin to change our mind.
Ayesha, "oh si cariño"????? Hehehehehehehe I can't believe, and from porn movies??? HEHEHEHEHEHEHE
Well, it's true, the Spanish are usually arrogants when they (i write "they" because I don't ;) ) talk about the Portuguese, but I'm trying to change that. Because Ayesha is right, they always try to speak in Spanish and they understand us everything, but we don't try to learn anything. But now, this is changing.
And about football, we'll see next time... hehehehe

    I live in Germany:

(Please don't take this seriously ;))

Poland: Stealing our cars and our jobs
Czech Republic: Stealing our jobs only, they've got their own cars cause VW bought Skoda
Austria: Stupid idiots talking very funny
Switzerland: Nice country for holidays and skiing, that's where all the German money is brought to
France: Nice neighbours. Except they take all our money we give the EU for their agriculture, we have a very good relationship to them
Luxembourg: Nice little country. The money which isn't brought to Switzerland lies here.
Belgium: Making good french fries. Nothing else to say.
Netherlands: Strange people, talking very funny and blockading the German motorways with their camping cars with yellow numberplates

    :D

    Interesting thread migle! :)

Moony already told you about France's view on its neighbors, but I'll give my views as being from a different part (or lets from different partS of France - south Perpignan and Britain).

I disagree on the south having a strong Spanish culture, I lived there for years and also in Spain, and it is really different cultures. I'd say that on the border, yes, but not the rest, except maybe the fact that Corridas are legal.

French people love to go Spain for holidays. You know, cheap prices, sun, beach...

I'd say that the French think of Italians as being pasta and pizza eaters, with really macho guys and sexy girls! hehe ;)

Monaco is pretty much like France... same as Luxembourg.

Andorra is a mix between France and Catalunya (north-est of Spain). Everything's cheap there!

Switzerland: people make fun of the Swiss accent, and they're thought of the always neutral ones, who don't wanna get involved in anything, who have tons of banks and who have pure democracy.

I agree with Moony on the Belgians... hehe :p And on England too, as well as Germany.

    That's it!

:) Well, I'm happy to have a go at this, although I think its going to confirm all your prejudices about the English!

I am English, we dislike all our immediate neighbours. The Scottish are mean and we can't understand what they say, and their education system is better than ours so we can't possibley like them. The Welsh sing too much and burn our holiday homes and want to talk in a language we can't make head nor tail of. The Irish, oh where do I start, the Irish are thick, poor and always fighting and are enjoying the European community far too much for our liking. We call Scottish people "jocks", all Welsh people "Taffy" , and Irish people "Paddy".

It doesn't get much better once you cross over into mainland Europe, we of course really dislike the French, they sometimes don't talk in English, smell of garlic, are cowardly and behave inappropriately towards our womenfolk.

I could go on, and do the rest of the European countries if you like, but I'd rather not start off a war...........................

We're neighbours to Sweden, (somehow) Norway, and the country in which Flowerian live - I don't exactly remember the name of that country. :p

The Swedes are ok - in DK we call Sweden "The-forbidden-country", but in fact Denmark is more restricted than Sweden.
And people in Norway are very happy, because they found plenty of oil. So some norwegians act like if they owed the whole world. I'm also quite sure that many clever norwegians don't care so much about their stupid oil.
And Flowerians country, our southern neighbour, is actually not so bad. They're actually like us on most points. And the country is very much aware about its past.

    love and understanding,

Please don't take this seriously! :D

I live in Finland and us Finns think that:
the Russians come here, steal our jobs, cars and they smell bad.
The Swedes are all gay. :D And they suck in ice hockey.
The Norwegians... ummm... the WHAT? Well... they are pretty non-existant to us. ;)

Nah, seriously that's all bullshit. :)

:) Ah thank you Moony for reassuring me, that we all hate each other equally LOL

However, maybe this is just some kind of inverted superiority of my English heritage, but I would like to know do other races behave like the English abroad? When I was a little girl many years ago now ( I am in my forties!) my parents decided to take us to a foreign country, there was much debate about which country to go to, finally Denmark was chosen as the least "bad" one. When we got there my parents changed their normal method of talk to shouting very slowly at strangers in broken English to make themselves understood. If the person didn't understand, they would shout louder (still in English) of course. Even as a child I found this embarrassing, LOL particularly so in Denmark where most people spoke better English than we did.

Do people from other countries do this when they travel, or is it an English phenomenon?

    Hola migle :)

I’ve discovered your thread now and it’s a truly interesting subject. It’s a ‘problem’ that haunts Europe since… always, and the same happens all around the world.

I agree with Ayesha, except my vision is kinda different ‘cose I’m from Madeira Island, living now is Lisboa. But I’ve been to Gallicia and I found people very nice... A good thing that I find in nuestros hermanos is that you’re much prouder on your culture than we are, the same for the italian.

But in my particular case, islands may have political neighbors (the continent), and what I can call ‘pirates’… in tourism. It’s fucking complicated to live in an island. We have neighbors from everywhere, from the emigration countries all over the world. Each island is a single little world… a point of passage. Anyway just to make a different point of neighborhood :D

HEHEEHEHEHEHHE, incredible, each day i love this thread more and more.
The post from moomin was fantastic, and i think all of us know about the English prejudices, hehehehhe
I forgot one thing, this is not relationated with Europe, but we are the European neighbours of African countries, and above all Maroc.
I could tell you about all the stupid prejudices that a lot people have against moroccan people. It's said that they come here and steal our jobs, also our cars LOL, but thanks to them we have hash here in Spain, and nobody seems to remember that, hehehehe.

And Amarylia, Madeira must be beautiful, it's one of the places I must go in life. It must be cool living there.
