Jimi Hendrix' version of The Star Spangled Banner from Woodstock, it still makes me all goosebumpy. It is, or should be, at least as relevent today as it was in 1969.

Break on through by the Doors.
Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles. Yeah, the entire album is as good as Rock and Roll will ever be. You know that part in A Day In The Life after Paul sings "someone spoke and I went into a dream" and John just sings "ahhh" over C, G, D, A . . . ? I could live in that part.

OMG. That is my and Bear's song, too! (But now we sing it "With four kids in the yard, life used to be so haaard, now everything is easy, cuz of youuuuuuuuu!") I knew I loved you, Mosaic!

When Bear and I got engaged I took an old paper bag, crunched it and burned the edges, and an old frame and wrote the song on the bag, actually COUNTED all the letters in each line, so it would be centered. (didn't have computers to do that back then) And drew flowers and stuff on it. We had it on the wall for years!

    Back to the thread.

Yeah, For What It's Worth, by Buffalo S.

    and

Goin Up to the Country, or

(cringe I said this) Woodstock :&

    Or

    RIPPLE Grateful Dead

    Ripple in still water.......

Bear and I stayed up all night figuring out the chords to this once (OK the cords aren't that hard, we got sidetracked, LOL!)

    Across the Universe The Beatles

Goin to California (with an achin in my heart) Led Zepplin

Mama, I'm Comin Home 10 Years After

Find the Cost of Freedom CSN&Y

    Hey, I ain't sticking to only 2!!!!

Now I had to go get some CDs to hear all these songs. Damn, I don't have Buffalo on CD, have to pull out the vinyl. (I got Bear a new turn table for his birthday.)

"Blowin' In The Wind." People will be singing that 100 years from now.
It's always a treat to "re-discover" a great song from that period that wasn't necessarily a hit.I heard a Richie Havens tune in a movie on TV (Coming Home,1978,with Jon Voight and Jane Fonda. If you've never seen it,find it.)
    It rang a vague bell,and had such a gorgeous melody,I had to find it.The title is "Follow",and it's on a few Havens albums,including a best-of compilation.To me,this song reeks of the late 60's.
Writing the lyrics doesn't do it justice. As I say,it has a melody that would bring a tear to a glass eye.

    Follow - Jerry Merrick

Let the river rock you like a cradle
Climb to the treetops, child, if you're able
Let your hands tie a knot across the table.
Come and touch the things you cannot feel.
And close your fingertips and fly where I can't hold you
Let the sun-rain fall and let the dewy clouds enfold you
And maybe you can sing to me the words I just told you,
If all the things you feel ain't what they seem.
And don't mind me 'cos I ain't nothin' but a dream.

The mocking bird sings each different song
Each song has wings - they won't stay long.
Do those who hear think he's doing wrong?
While the church bell tolls its one-note song
And the school bell is tinkling to the throng.
Come here where your ears cannot hear.
And close your eyes, child, and listen to what I'll tell you
Follow in the darkest night the sounds that may impel you
And the song that I am singing may disturb or serve to quell you
If all the sounds you hear ain't what they seem,
Then don't mind me 'cos I ain't nothin' but a dream.

The rising smell of fresh-cut grass,
    Smothered cities choke and yell with fuming gas;
I hold some grapes up to the sun
And their flavour breaks upon my tongue.
With eager tongues we taste our strife
And fill our lungs with seas of life.
Come taste and smell the waters of our time.
And close your lips, child, so softly I might kiss you,
Let your flower perfume out and let the winds caress you.
As I walk on through the garden, I am hoping I don't miss you
If all the things you taste ain't what they seem,
Then don't mind me 'cos I ain't nothin' but a dream.

The sun and moon both are right,
And we'll see them soon through days of night
But now silver leaves on mirrors bring delight.
And the colours of your eyes are fiery bright,
While darkness blinds the skies with all its light.
Come see where your eyes cannot see.
    And close your eyes, child, and look at what I'll show you;
Let your mind go reeling out and let the breezes blow you,
Then maybe, when we meet, suddenly I will know you.
If all the things you see ain't what they seem,
    Then don't mind me 'cos I ain't nothin' but a dream .
And you can follow; And you can follow; follow...

    wow bluesbilly dave
one of my favorite movies and definitely my favorite richie havens song.and as good as the lyrics are they're made even better when you hear the music that goes with it. it always makes me cry. for those who haven't heard it, if you can find it online, i'd recommend downloading it. it's beautiful.

one song that no one has mentioned that came out in '67 at the same time as "somebody to love" is the grassroots' "live for today". it definitely summed up the hippie philosophy for me at the time.

When..I think of all the worries
    people seem to find.
And how they're in a hurry
    to complicate their mind.
    By chasing after money.
and dream that can't come true
I'm glad that we are different
    we've better things to do
    May others plan their future,
    I'm busy lovin' you..
    .1-2-3-4
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    And don't worry
    'bout tomorrow,
    hey, hey, hey
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    ..We..
    were never meant to worry
    the way that people do.
And I don't need to hurry
as long as I'm with you.
We'll take it nice and easy
    and use my simple plan.
    You'll be my lovin' woman
    I'll be your lovin' man.
    We'll take
    the most from living,
    have pleasure while we can
    ..2-3-4
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    And don't worry.
    'bout tomorrow,
    hey, hey, hey
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    Live for today

    I need to feel you
    inside of me
    I got to feel you
    deep inside of me
    .please come close to me
.I got to have you now,
    please, please, please
    Gimme some-a lovin'
    Gimme some-a lovin'
    Gimme some-a lovin'
    Gimme some-a lovin'
    Baby gimme some a lovin'
    Gimme some-a lovin,
    I need all your lovin'
    Gimme some-a lovin,
    I need all your lovin'
    Give me some love, now
    I need all your lovin'
Sha la la la la la

    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    And don't worry
    'bout tomorrow,
    hey, hey, hey
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for toda
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    Sha-la-la-la-la-la,
    live for today
    Live for today

'Church or temple or Ka-ba stone, Koran or Bible or martyr's bone,
All these and more my heart can hold, for my faith is now in Love alone.

A god, a prophet, a deity; the essence of philosophy,
All these and more my heart can hold, for my faith is now in Love alone.'
