Oprah is saying they aknowledged that they knew who she was, so that really puts us back to them leaving her out because of 1. a legitimate reason 2. she was oprah (which I'll set as a legitimate reason)
It's special treatment to be allowed in a store after it's closed. And if it is how you say, then perhaps had it been a non famous white woman she still would have been denied acces, the store being closed and her not being a celebrity.. Even if it did come down to anything more than the store being closed, it would be merely that they didn't recognize her as someone famous, and so made no exceptions.. It's still not a race issue. Oh no, she doesn't get her special treatment she's used to.. Who gives a fuck?
Hello? I guess I'll have to say this one more time: They did not know it was Oprah. She is not all that well known and famous in France. So she was just some black woman off the street to them. And they acted accordingly. Perhaps reading the entire thread (before you comment) might be a smart idea? Just a thought... Peace, PD
Sorry, but I don't agree. If a wealthy white woman had been in the same position, she would have been allowed to enter the store. So how can this be anything other than a race issue? It's just too convenient to say Oprah is asking for special treatment. Rich people DO get special treatment. That's just the way things are in this crazy little world. That doesn't make it right, but it's foolish to pretend that it doesn't happen. However, when you are black (no matter how wealthy you are) you can still get discriminated against based on the color of your skin. So money talks? Sure. As long as you are white. Peace, PD
Okay, but the store has changed their original story. At first they were saying that they didn't know it was Oprah, and they had problems in the past with "African" customers. So that's why she was treated so shabbily. Then, after they realized how totally racist that makes them sound, they turned it around and said they knew it was Oprah, but they had been closed for fifteen minutes, and don't change their rules for anybody. Even a celebrity. *Rolling my eyes* Peace, PD
LOL. Actually, it looks like Oprah already has cancelled an order or two that she had with the store. Plus she might end up talking about the incident on her show during the fall season. So something tells me that France is not gonna be able to just sweep this one under the rug. Peace, PD
yea ok. im a minority and i still dont give a fuck. i get discriminated against like that every day, life goes on. quit bitching already. lol at you gettin so worked up over this. get a fuckin life man, shit
so now I'm hearing about this shit on the real news..... I'm gonna have to agree w\ screw on this one now.....
Looks like I'm not the only one that needs to get a life. LOL. (Ever heard of a little thing called Silence=Death? Probably not, since you obviously think the best approach to dealing with bigotry is to just to walk around with your head stuck up you ass.) Peace, PD
Cool. Must be awful smelly and dark in that place where you and your little friend are. You both really should get out more. LOL. Peace, PD P.S. WTF is the "real news"?
Truth be told, I don't think we really will get to hear all the facts until Oprah talks about it on her show. And that won't happen until the new fall season. However, I think it is very revealing that the store clerk and manager keep altering their statements about what happened. That's usually a sign that they've got something to hide. Like the truth. Peace, PD
you'll hear what oprahs people tell her to say, it probably will only vaguly resemble the truth and even if she flat out lies who will believe anyone over oprah, she has become some sort of fucked religion and you are apparently an acolyte....
Damn, is that the best insult you can come up with? LMFAO. Like I said before, you really should get out more. Peace, PD
Hello. I haven't read this entire thread, but if you read the news stories about this on CNN and MSNBC, they say the reason the shop closed early and would not allow her in, was because they were holding a special Gala that night and the employees were busy setting the store up for the event. It has nothing to do with racial profiling or because of who she was. People try and play the race card all to often in this world and that is something I absolutely find disgusting and ridiculous. Even for Oprah!
When my friends get insulted in stores, or followed around, or asked to leave, just cuz of their ethnicity, no one hears about it. And when I tell people how it is a regular event, many people don't believe that in this day and age that still goes on. If Oprah was snubbed cuz she's black, then I am glad that the world is hearing about it, cuz I think that there are a lot of pretty naive people that need to know that racism, prejudice, and bigotry is alive and well in 2005. It sounds like it is possible that discrimination may not have been the motive for the Paris boutique, 'Hermes' actions, ( I tend to doubt it was anything but racism.), but even if it was not, at least this story brings focus on a real, and shameful part of current society. I doubt I'll ever have the chance to, but if I did, I wouldn't spend one franc there.
FOr one thing, there really isn't much white/black racism in France, nothing at all like exists on this side. And another thing, if the store was closed and I walked up, I would not expect to get in either. If it was racism, thats on them, but I doubt it was and either way the country of France isn't going to care about Oprah bitching about it on her show. She should stick to more everyperson issues instead of the small inconveniences of a billionaire.
