I am thinkin about getting an external HDD. 70gb HD, 7200rpm speed, for only 40-somthin bucks at K-mart heh. I currently have a 60gb HDD inside. So now were talking about somthing very cheap that stores alot of memory right?, Songs, Masive programs, games ETC.
With 1 extra stupid user who cant avoid malicious code, My brother!

With the External HDD will i need to install all the computers drivers onto the HDD itself? The external HDD were talking about is USB, will i need a new power suply, because im soon to get a DVD burner, with already a cd burner, and reguler cd-rom that came stock heh, also with a 9600xt, and a stock soundblaster :/...live series, and 512 mb of processing ram (came stock with 256)?
    Thanks for the replys.

    i wouldnt think so

youve listed a dvd burnder, cd burner and a regular cdrom
if youre planning on getting more than one optical drive, dont bother. the dvd burner will do all of the above

i dont see why youd need the drivers on the other drive, unless you were booting from it. it would make more sense to make it a slave.

as for the power supply, i wouldnt think so, though i guess it would depend on your current power supply, if it were able to provide enough power to everything, which it probly should

do you mean you want an external harddrive just to store you media and such?

i've got one, a 160 that i backup to and leave off most of the time.

it installs itself, no drivers required, plugs in via USB. it came with it's own power cord, and plugs into a wall outlet, thusly does not put any strain on your computer power supply.

It will. Yes. But, if you want to say COPY a CD without having to copy it to a hard drive FIRST, two are better than one.

As for the power supply question, I would need to know more about your machine. Brand, amps your current supply can handle, all kinds of good stuff like that. MOST if not all USB devices are "Plug & Play". Winblows loads the drivers for them when you boot up as long as they are installed on your machine.
(I cannot STRESS this part enough: SHUT OFF your computer BEFORE you plug it in!!! You'll fry something!)

That would depend on the drive's design. I prefer Internal. I suggest you check your BIOS after you install it to make sure your machine will recognize it.
(On most computers, hit F2 on bootup. Others, hit "Delete".)

im not sure if external drives are the same, but internal drives can be made a slave by setting the jumper to the slave setting. this is just a lil peice of plastic which goes ont he pins. the drive should come with instructions

external drives, as far as a iknow, don't really do the master/slave thing.

i'm lookin at mine, and there's no jumpers in sight.

mine is plug and play, as i leave it off all the time, and turn it on, winblows says "whoo...new device!" and it shows up under my comptuer and such

i have an external hard drive and its USB, comes with powercable and you don't need to install any drivers on it, i've installed games on it before and they work perfectly.
And yes you can easily take it round someones house and it will work

that's exactly what i'm sayin. i took my external drive down to my buddies house, plugged it in, and 'poof' it shows up just fine. like a gigantic floppy disk.

as far as playin some CS:source on it, well....it's a 7200rpm WesternDigital drive, so decent enough; your call on playing games off it

hi...yes it is possible :it depends if your mainboard/pci/firewire... usb2.0 driver etc is installed with windoiz 98 me 2000 mostly you have to install drivers, windoiz xp can detect ex hdd and does not need drivers to be installed with linux you have to let the kernel know that you want to use ex hdd....
