This year I'll be coming to Germany for a year for a high-school exchange prog! I just found out that I'm going to a city called Rehfelde and I'll be staying with a very nice family who called me today! I don't know a lot of German yet but I will! If anyone has any tips or advice (I guess that's kindof the same thing), I have open ears and an open mind to any suggestions. Excitement!

Do you speak or do you understand German?
If you understand it, you could look at the German forum and try to read the threads.

Thanks! I only understand extremely minimal German. When I get there I will be in an intensive language class for a month (4 hours a day of language, 2 hours a day of orientation to the country) so I am not TERRIBLY worried (only a little!). I think I'll pass on the German threads, but thanks for the tip!

I never heard from Rehfelde, by making a google search I saw, that it's near by Berlin with all, you need to have für your amusement. Here at Germany most people learned some english at school, you should have no problem, getting all info, you need before you have learned enough german by yourself. Even most of the german tourist info web sites have an english version. As allready mentioned by Heaven, feel free to ask all here or at the German board, what you want to know.

I don't live in Germany. But I did live there for 10 years. I love Germany. Try to visit the different castles. There is one that they based the Disney castle off of, Neuschwanstein castle

There are some salt mines you can go to. The one we went to you got in small boats that took you thru some very nice caverns. This one is located in Berchtesgaden

Go to the christmas market it is fun. Be prepared for the cold. At the market you should try the Gluewein. It is a hot wine. Spicy like sangria.
You have an advantage over me by getting to be in the German Community. My Husband was military so we lived in the American Community. Just Mingle in. It is a real fun place to be.

Well, I live in the middle of Germany near Frankfurt, but I can tell you it's a very nice country ;) Berlin is a very exciting city, you can see the changes of the last 15 years, after the Berlin wall fell, everywhere, it's really nice. Munich, as you say, is also very beautiful. It's a very very rich and clean city, every bulding nicely cleaned and renovated. Really nice. If you're interested in technique, you should visit the "Deutsches Museum" ("German Museum") there, it's the largest technical museum in the whole world. But I think Southernman is from Munich, he'll surely know more about the city than I do ;) Fell free to post this thread again in the German forum, we really like to help you there :)

Been there, saw that and unfortunatelly the weather wasn't too nice (foggy) but I am still quite impressed! :)

There are many other nice castles around there, too, the ones made by Ludwig the Bavarian (is that the english word for him?! Ich habe keine Idee, lol.) are really beautiful.

If you'll be in the south, too, I'd recommend you to see Innsbruck, which is in Austria but it's really close to border line, and Eagle's Nest (well-known Hitler's residence on some mountain) is also a very interesting place to see, if you go there be sure to check out Salzburg, too which is in Austria, but really close to the borderline and it's worth a visit.

I hope that all helped you at least a lil' bit and good luck,
    Borut

He wasn't "Ludwig der Bayer" (= "Ludwig the Bavarian"), just only "Ludwig II". And Germany is full of beautiful castles, but Ludwig's ones, Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Herrenchiemsee are really the most beautiful ones. Neuschwanstein is an outrageous experience when the weather is nice. That's it for those of you who don't know it:
